Default My November Give Away Item Has Arrived

The November giveaway was a new product called the Detours Knucklebone. It is a swing down spare tire carrier designed to be used with a Class II rear receiver hitch. Here it is

Not all that impressive on the ground, but believe me it is very versatile and a much cheaper alternative to getting a new rear bumper with swing away tire carrier. Installation is easy. All you need is an allen wrench and some end wrenches for adjustment.

All you do is put it in the receiver hitch and run the pin through just like normal.

There is a small hole at the base that you insert an allen wrench or 3/8" square drive into and tighten the allen bolt. This serves two purposes. It keeps the tire carrier from rattling and also in my opinion makes it nearly theft proof, unless the theif knows how it is secured. It is not readily apparent looking at it. Also you will notice that there is plenty of room for the tail gate to swing up past it when lowered.

The next thing to do is adjust the tire bracket. It slides in and out to accommodate various wheels and tire sizes. Mine is a 31X10.50X15 on a stock wheel. There was still some adjustment even with a wider than normal tire on a 5" back spacing.

Here is the tire on and swung down.

IIRC, Mark has designed this to work with up to a 33" tire. But with my lift and the way my receiver is made, I think a 35" tire would work nicely.

All in all, I have to compliment Mark for his engineering and thoughtfully covering all the bases. And believe me, I don't hand those kinds of compliments out lightly. Thank you XJTalk and Detours

It is awesome to see some more real reviews of another awesome Detours product.. I think I might actually pick one of these up to use with my stock bumper, as well as any rear bumper I'm looking at.. instead of a rattling tire carrier bumper, that costs way more..

    Lucky Sod ...

Looks like a real good bit of kit.

I especially like the allen key anti-rattle / "anti-theft" system .... much better than drilling, welding a nut on, and just using a bolt like I normally do - to stop hitch rattles.

    Looks great Steve!
That one was engineered for an actual hitch, but your custom bumper has it's hitch area low, so it worked out great!
The 'anti-rattle wedge lock' can be locked with a 3/8" ratchet exstension as well as an allen wrench.
Hope you enjoy it for years to come, and thanks for the kind words!

If figured they'd be a standard center cap. You can find them on ebay pretty easy. Also, I noticed Lowes carries these metal "caps" that look a lot like center caps in the specialty hardware area with nuts and bolts.

They are not the same as the caps for the steelies. A little larger and fit differently.

We should have 4 of them around somewhere

I like the looks of it. The real test comes when your wife or daughter tries to raise the spare back up after lowering it. If she can accomplish that then it is a great item.

Ebay. I found a set for my Grizzly's. I still have 2 spares kicking around because I only needed 2 and had to buy a set of 4.

In THEORY... this can accomodate any size tire your using... once the tire swings down it hits thr ground correct... the height of the tire is the same as the tire height of the 4 that are keeping the jeep at height ,therefore the higher your jeep will be as well which means no matter what size tire you put on the spare carrier... the rear hatch will ALWAYS clear your tire once its swung to the ground resting... provided the hitch can CARRY that much weight!...

There is a limit. If you look at this pic, it is at full bend. So even with lift, there is a limit for the tailgate to clear. My opinion is that with a taller lift you can get by with a 35" tire.

Can your wife return the spare to it's upright position and latch it?
