    Default 4.0L Distributor Info

    Jeep 4.0L Distributors

90's model Jeep distributors for the 4.0L are a confusing issue , how many of you have gone to your local auto parts store to get your first replacement cap & rotor and had them ask you which dist you had in your 94 Cherokee or had them give you the wrong one for your 94 Grand Cherokee .Here is the
problem , officially Mopar used the 53006150 dist in the 91-93 year cherokee , grand cherokee & wrangler but they are found in 94 models and I have heard of one in a 95 grand cherokee . Below is a list of the officiall distributor for the different years. The 53006150 dist uses a pick up modual in it that sets below a steel plate , this doesen't look like it is replacable with out a rebuild it also has a smaller shaft in it and its rotor has a prong off the back of it that sticks down into the steel plate. The 58027028 (94-99) dist has a removable CMPS (camshaft position sensor) located below the rotor and has a larger shaft a more nomal looking rotor. You can replace your 53006150 dist with a 56027028 I did it in my 94 Cherokee. What makes things worse about these dist is that alot of parts houses don't seem to know of the problem and a lot of listings show conflicting years , also there is a newer model of the 53006150 out there now that has the removable CMPS in it. Below are some model numbers and pictures of the different distributors , caps & rotor I was able to find . I hope this helps you out if you need information about your dist.

Are all OBD1 interchangeable? Are all OBD2 interchangeable? How about between OBD1 and OBD2. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ron
The 560270028 dist came out in 1994 (OBD1) and was used until 1999 (OBD2) so it is compatable for at least the 91-99 model yrs ,I know this because my 94 had the 53006150 91-93 dist in it and now has the 56027028 .

OBD2 may pickup on a older dist put in it 91-93 beacuse it has the right plug in but I don't know for sure.

The 89-90 model yrs had the 53007190 dist in it and may have been used earlier , if it is different inside ie: the pickup than the 91-93 then it probably wouldn't swap.

Reviving an old thread, I know, but I wanted to attest to this as well...'

I had the 53006150 distributor (renix style) in mine and recently swapped it with the A1-Cardone model of 5027028AB. Didn't work at first because my fuel pressure was too low. After fixing the problem with fuel pressure, the newer style works EXCELLENT! Added benefit - when the sync sensor goes caput, it's super easy to change it without having to pull the dizzy and remove the cam gear.
