Hey at least it wasn't bent up for nothing.. I know that doesn't help the situation.. but it was a successful pull and use.. even if it wasn't what it was fully designed for.. LOL

Looks like you just did a supreme test of the strength. It only bent, I would imagine that lesser units would have torn apart or at least cracked.

I'm thinking you're deserving some sort of award......
No one has ever done that before.......

I agree that is quite a testimony for the backbone for sure.. Yeah it might have bent.. but wasn't being used completely for what it was designed for.. but as was stated... I think any other unit, would have probably broken off, not just bent a bit... Awesome work on that design for sure!!

I'm waiting on a call back from my sometimes engineer, after speaking with Matt, I think much greater force was applied than origanally thought.

    No redesign required.
I 'doubt' the circumstances will be repeated anywhere again, on earth.

Their is no need to redo anything on the backbone. I would agree that the pressure that i applied (not on purpose) was multiplied by the hitch i was using to hold the trailer in place. It didn't help that the winch at one point pulled the durango and trailer together (which caused the bend) So if i can't straighten this one out I will buy another no questions about that! Sorry Mark i may ask for the homeboy hookup price

I contacted him because he knows the math calculations......and here they are......

Sean is a Structural/Mechanical Engineer at a well know helicopter plant, he is very familiar with the BackBone.........After describing the situation and everything involved with what happened.....he estimated the following-

At the time of the bend, based on a pull rate of 6,000lb on the cable, aprox. 3,500 'FOOT' pounds of torque was being applied to the BackBone mounting system......(He followed that with laughter and stated 'Thats ALOT'.....He also stated that the way Matt had configured the pull, zero force was transfered to the truck, thus no broken bolts or movement, the BackBone's mounting plate took all the force, he followed that with a "He's Lucky" comment........ All that said, as far as no welds breaking, his comment was "you did good!".......So, I'll be sticking with the brand of wire I've been using, thats for sure!

    Thats all I got.......

I'd like to fully understand what happened here. I'm guessing I'm not the only one that doesn't understand and may make a similar mistake, perhaps without the "lucky" results.

How did the cable "attach" to the trailer and act as a winch block?
