I've seen that before and seriously thought about it.

How much space is between the cover and the armor?

I bet a set of covers could be had at the JY for less than 10.

We gave them between 3 & 8mm(1/8"&5/16" depending what diffs you have) tho you need to have it close as possible on the front because of track bar......It's not rocket science. We cut the face plate off the discarded half & turned it over then mounted it back on to reinforce it(welded it in place)to double strength the mount where the bolts go thru....Just try some washers as packing to space it out & get it where you want it.
Remember to leave enough room to wash out any mud that gets between them.......

    Cheers,

    AL

Oh, no doubt about that Tim.. That is why I said I'm going to have to look into doing that.. way cheaper and may not be as good as an aftermarket option.. but will be better than just the stock cover by itself..

My spare d30 is jacked (passenger C is bent so the upper ball joint is barely touching), and I have 2 spare 8.25's. This will probably be a spring project.

I've been thinking about this for a long time. Just never got around to it.

That's a great idea. Don't mind if I use that on my Raider.

I am thinking of hitting up the JY's here in SC while I'm here to see if I can't manage to find some spare covers to build some of these for my XJ..

And I don't think he minds you using this design on anything.. think that was the point of him sharing the idea..

Well, looks like I'll be picking up a few spare covers next time I'm at the JY. Cool idea!

I made one for my d30 like this out of a stock cover too then had a friend powdercoat it for me.

Thumbs up Re: Differential Cover Protector

    Greeno,
That what I call recycling man. Saving money ain't a bad idea either. Thanks for the posting it. Have you thought about sealing the gap around the top with RTV to keep the mud and possibly unwanted critters out?
    Wolf,
Nice one too. Thanks for sharing. Is there a gap around your diff and protector?
    Later..............

Thumbs up Re: Differential Cover Protector

    Dave,
Nice idea. Thanks for starting the string. It's, ingenuity, recycling, and cost effectiveness all rolled up in one out of necessity. Sweet! ARB red is a nice touch too. Have you thought about sealing the gap with RTV to keep the mud and possible creatures out?

    Dennis,
Nice approach too. Did the cover warp when the band was welded to it? Hope not. Did you install it over the real cover? If so, is there a gap involved?

No I didn't install it over an other cover so no gap. Also I. tac welded it to a welding table to keep it from warping then cut it lose and cleaned it up before powder coating it.
