    has anyone swapped in a ford 9" i can pick one up for free just wondering if its worth the work

    I have not done it personally, but I would use one of these over a D60. They have a stronger ring and pinion and can be built with 35 spline axles, many of them have them. I have also heard of using a special locker and 40 spline axle (like 2.5 tons). There is a bunch of aftermarket support for them and you can weld anywhere on the housing, making them easier to do 4 link suspensions, or antiwrap bars or whatever.

    I would certainly say grab it if you can get it for free... even if in the end you decided not to use it and you sell it... you can use that money on something you will want or make use of...
