    Default engine & tranny swap

here's the story my nephew wants to get into offroading but he doesn't have alot of money we found 2 XJ's. 1 is a 2 door w/a 2.8 not sure if it runs the other is a 4 door w/a 4.0 the guy says it runs but there was something wrong with the electrical system the underside of the dash was all ripped out.
1st ? is it possible to swap the 4.0 into the 2 door (engine tranny transfercase all the way to the exhaust)?
2nd ? he could possibly get them both for 600, would it be worth the trouble or just get something running?

Dont by the 2.8. Its a POS. I owned a 1986 4 dr. with the 2.8 I spent more time and money keeping it running than i did driving it. Go for the 4.0 Aw4 and you will never look back.

Well I guess I'd have to look at them myself, but 2 XJ's for 600, I'd certainly consider buying them. You should have enough parts to get one running!

    What years?

the 2.8 is '84-'86 not quite sure which is the one that is in ok condition and the 4.0 that would be the donor is a '91. I figured use whatever is needed for the 2 door and keep spare parts from the 4 door and scrap the rest. BUt how complicated or expensive would it be to swap it.

I think it would be less complicated to fix the 91, plus it is newer.

Take what you need and sell the 2 door. Someone would probably give you good money for it.
