Pulled an oil sample from the XJ. My last one didn't look so good and I think the syringe I used to pull the sample through the dipstick hole may have been contaminated so I pulled another.

Can anyone explain the difference between the 4 part time and 4 full time? My 2000 XJ only has the Part Time. Can I simply swap a T-case and get the full time?

The main difference is that the NP242 tcase has a differential in it that allows an additional gear called full time 4WD. It acts like the open differential in your rear end that allows the front and rear axle to be engaged but travel at different speeds. The full time option locks the drive shafts together so that they have to travel at the same speed. Thus you can use the full time option on wet or dry pavement without damage while the part time you cannot without risking damage

Thanks for the explanation. So is the additional gear in the T-case or is it in the rear end? Why is it risking damage to the Jeep if you run on pavement with 4WD part time? I thought 4WD was safe to use on wet pavement like in a rain storm. Am I understanding this correctly?

Not quite. 4WD part time should only be engaged when extra traction is needed, such as off road, snow on the road and other situations where extra traction is needed. If done on dry pavement slight differences in rotation speed from tire wear, turning etc will put tremendous pressure on the drive train. One of two things must happen. The tires have to slip or parts break.

The rain storm conditions where pavement is merely wet is a good place for full time 4WD where the extra differential gears in the transfer case compensate for differences in rotation. However if you are in very bad conditions, such as a mud hole or deep snow etc then you would use the other option of part time 4WD

Yes you can swap from the 231 to the 242. For a 2000 you'd need to find one from a 97+ with the same transmission. Driveshafts are the same. The reason for the year range and transmission are input spline counts.

If you want the shifter in the Jeep to make sense youll need the shift bezel and shift gate. This isnt absolutely needed but rounds out the swap nicely.

Some also go through the trouble of wiring up the full time light on the dash as well. Again not needed but a nice touch for the swap.

My biggest problem has been finding a 242 locally.

Thanks for the info. I frequent the local yards and will keep an eye out. Never done anything like this before, but I want to learn and enjoy turning wrenches.

Would a 242 from a WJ or a TJ work?

You wont find one in a TJ. They're all 231s with exception of the Rubicons with the 241OR. I believe that ZJ and WJ 242s will swap but youll have to verify input shaft and output shaft spline counts.

You can swap some 242s from the WJ. The input on the ones from a 4.7L V8 are too long, but can be changed out with your old input if you are willing to take them all the way apart and reassemble

Not what you want to see when you park at a store on the way home after a 9 hour training session. Apparently the electric fan was ever so slightly rubbing on the transmission cooler feed line one part of the fan's frame has a break and allows a small amount of movement. Apparently it was just enough to contact that line. It ruptured somewhere betwern I30 and the walmart neighborhood market dumping a gallon of DexIII all over the place.

Luckily the wife was home and came to my rescue so i didnt have to walk all over town. a gallon of DexIII and a line splice later i rolled to the pay and spray and hosed all the trans fluid off the Jeep.

Yes you did. Those decals do a good job of holding the glass together. Was that a really big rock?
