    Default My Welding Projects

I bought a welder a few months ago. Just thought I'd share some of the small projects I've been working on. Sorry, at least these first ones aren't Jeep-related yet. I hope to soon graduate to being able to make something for our Jeeps, but until then these are my practice projects.

This is the first real thing that I made:

Made from scrap 1/8'' plate, not much to look at. We use it to hold our TV remotes.

After I finished that, I was trying to decide what to make next. That's when my girlfriend told me she didn't think I could make a metal pyramid... I figured, "I'LL SHOW HER!"

    Made a cardboard cutout

Then cut it out of more scrap 1/8'' plate

    Tacked it all together

    Welded it up

Then gave it a good grinding

    I SURE PROVED HER WRONG!

Next I got a bit more ambitious and decided to try to make a hexagonal box with a hinged lid.

The hardest part was trying to figure out how to make the hinge work properly.

    Blended it in:

all my projects seem to be practice ones. With about 15 minutes of "formal " instruction, I have been practicing at it for over 35 years. With the exception of small fixes for a couple people, I have welded to suit myself. I figure its something when the pieces stick together after I'm done welding.

Your off to a very good start! The bead looks nice and even on the remote box, and the rest look good too! The fitting of your projects is also well done. Have you tried any vertical or overhead welds yet? They come in handy when you can't lay your work flat. Anyway it all looks good, so keep it up!

Funny you should mention that. I was actually contemplating buying some of those kits from the Lincoln foundation but I couldn't bring myself to spend so much on shipping! So I just stopped by the scrap metal yard I pass on my way to work and picked up a few hundred pounds of scrap instead.

Thanks! I've been practicing my vertical welding and have tried a little overhead, but I really do need to practice this more. Thanks for the reminder.

When you are able to, check out Everlast welders. For all the features they offer, the price is hard to beat.

Until then, you're always welcome in my shop in Dallas.

This is my most recent project, finished it last night. It is a Christmas present for my boss. Last year we published a paper that, among other things, showed that when you knock out LRP6 from mouse smooth muscle cells you see a huge upregulation in Asymmetric Dimethylarginine (ADMA). A lot of our current research is building on this so I figured I would build him a sculpture of ADMA.

He seemed to like it, so hopefully that means I'll have a job for another year.

Looks like you're having some fun with the welding projects ..

Dunno about that chemistry one tho ??,

... I think it needs a B-B-Q fork welded on the base,
... with a mouse skewered on it ..
I hate watching simplicity and reliability being ruined by bureaucracy and technology.

Which reminds everyone, Jeep people are hugely multi-talented, and skilled in many disciplines.... Must be the "tinkering" we have to do.

So if there every actually is a Day-Z, find Jeep people and stick with them...and don't be surprised if they know a little about everything....or are good friends with someone who does.

Great projects, Abe. I also went the "other" brand route with my plasma cutter, a Longevity unit. Looked long at the Everlast line.

Have been happy with the unit and customer service...yeah, if I was rolling in I would have bought big three, but.....
