This is one of the rare ones (I think). It's a pre ban open bolt. No firing pin, so to speak. Yes it's fun to shoot but you can't hit with it.

I should probably contribute to this thread.......

Ive picked up a few new toys to add to the collection in the last 6 months or so. I got an Aero Precision AR with a bunch of aftermarket goodies, and I recently picked up a Glock 43 single stack 9mm, and a Diamondback DB9 (9mm) as a package deal from the guy that I bought my yellow Xj from. Both came with Talon grips, Trijicon XD HR sights, and 2 extended mags.

That's what my defensive pistol class instructor said. He also dissed my 1911. He said every class he taught, the 1911s would fail. Mine didn't, in fact most of the others failed. Mine doesn't even have sights and it still shoots good.

There's a little truth in there. I shoot competitively and there are 2 groups of guns you can bet will choke on "game day". Highly modded guns, and 1911s or variants thereof. The vast majority of factory guns will run and run and run and you don't have to worry about them. To be fair to the 1911 platform the majority of them in competitive shooting circles have been jacked with so many of them fall into that first category.

It's fun to pick my mags up off the ground knock the dirt off of them on a blue barrel reload them and shoot again while the guys with the whizbang guns are disassembling mags between every stage and punching them out with a mag cleaning brush so their guns don't choke on a spec of dirt on the next stage, or the open guys who put protective bags over their holster/gun between each stage to keep dust off of them.

Not a knock against 1911s. I like them, they work, but the design is over 100 years old at this point and they do require some form of fitting of parts and finagling (generally speaking) to get them to be as reliable as other more modern designs. They're also heavy compared to modern polymer offerings. My fully loaded G17 weighs less than an empty 1911 and has more than 2 times the ammo capacity. I still keep a 1911 in the gun safe though for fun.

anyone doing any long range shooting? Looking at a couple different rifles. .300 RUM is what I'll likely end up with. Although my old Ruger 7mm Mag doesn't look too shabby on paper compared to the RUM and I've already got the gun. .338 is another candidate. then there's the .300 weatherby..

let me know what you're shooting and some long range shots or kills.

Well, I don't shoot competitively. I shoot for practice and I take the defensive pistol classes to keep my skills up. I've taken 5 classes in 3 years. Each class lasts about 5 hrs and uses up 3-400 rounds. I have 2 1911s. One Kimber and one Colt Combat Commander. I haven't shot the Colt as much as the Kimber, but The only problem I have is after about 250 rounds it starts to stick in my holster, making it harder to draw during class. I cured that by getting some holster lube spray. I also have trouble reaching the mag release button with my thumb. Either it's a long reach or I have a short thumb.

I did used to shoot competitively, but with muzzleloaders. Rife, pistol and shotgun. Back then I would use 3-500 rounds a year. Now I only hunt with them. Deer and wild turkey.

Here's my Kimber loaded (8 rounds), and ready to go. 1lb 14ozs.

Use your weak hand thumb to dump the mag on your way to a new mag. Larry Vickers uses the same technique when running 1911s and M9s on the slide stop /release levers due to the reach to them.

Love doing pistol/rifle/shotgun courses. Not much like burning 500 to 1200 rounds and learning in the process
