    how difficult is it to switch out the head gasket on a 99 inline six?

    Depends on what you consider difficult, but the average do-it-yourselfer can get it done with relative ease. Some things you'll want to be mindful of like the correct torque specifications on the head bolts and such

    Completely agree. Good thing is the 4.0 is a fairly easy engine to do this on, compared to a V type engine. I do suggest getting the head check for a straight gasket surface, and magnafluxed for cracks. Both can be done at a machine shop.
