    Default Engine swap options?

My friend has a 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee. All-wheel-drive 4.7, has pretty bad rod knock. None of the local yards have 4.7's they do not want the hassle of ordering 4.7 since they are so problematic. What can be put in its place with ease?

You could go back to the 5.2. But not sure about the mounts or bolting to the tranny. I am just getting into these engines

I think I read that they will not hook up but I won't swear to it. If they did hook up you would probably need 2 computers, 1 for tranny 1 for motor. I don't know how that would work out. Also to pass emissions( depending on local)you would need a 5.2 from a 2000..... Dakota? Ram? maybe

Like i said, I am in the dark here. Just getting acquainted with these. If you have the 45RE trans, the 5.2 should hook up.

That is interesting, because supposedly they are made with close tolerances so they will last. Oil too light maybe? And how many miles is this happening at?

I know where 5 WJs are sitting and all need 4.7 in them.

The 4.7 is a great motor, IF it's taken care of. If the previous owner let it over heat or didn't keep up the maintenance, it will have problems. I just had my 4.7 rebuilt and it is great. Now, I just need to take care of it. Personally, I would rebuild the 4.7 and not deal with the swap out.

I'd have to agree with Cody. Not based on my direct experience owning a 4.7 but just what I've read over months & months of WJ research. Keep up with oil changes & just some basic common sense like stop driving when the temp gauge goes higher than normal. Apparently the aluminum heads are prone to warping pretty quickly when temps rise.

I had a WJ 4.0 and miss it terribly. But this time around I'm going for the 4.7. The extra power on tap is VERY nice to have. My dad has an 02 I might end up with

I have the 4.7 HO engine and it has 187k on it so far. The heads were redone because of a recall (valve seats) This engine like regular oil changes and contrary to the factory specs for oil (5W30) I use 10W40 in it with no problems at all. This engine is a beast if you just take care of it.
