I have thought of doing the same thing myself... stupid place to put an electrical component. I have heard of people adapting the A/C Bracket to accept the Alternator, but I believe you would then have to adapt the idler pulley to the bottom.

The Jeep Wrangler (TJ, maybe YJ as well?) has the Alt in the upper location and the A/c lower on the other side. If you could find a trashted TJ or at least a complete 4.0 out of one you could use the front accessories from it.

The 98 TJ does not have the alternator on the top. But the YJ does. But to do that you would need to install a serious electric fan, like the Taurus fan to replace your mechanical fan

I stand corrected... I knew I had seen a 4.0 with the alternator on top. Thank you Steve.

No problem. The only reason I know is that my son has one of each. And I get to spend time under the hood of both

Just to muddy the waters a little bit.

Stock factory, '97, RHD, setup .......

You may need to look at fan arrangements as 4.3LXJ suggested ... and I dont know whether pulley sizes vary from LHD to RHD ...

Best bet might be to find a RHD U.S. postie unit ... and run the tape measure over it ??.

edit .... and if recall correctly ... the alternator was in the way of accessing #1 plug on my RHD TJ too.

I hate watching simplicity and reliability being ruined by bureaucracy and technology.
