    Default Dr. Virus

I got hit by one of those little pesky bastard programs where you are minding your own business reading a web page then this dumb assed program runs trying to trick you into installing something.

I can usually get out of it, but this one was really bad. Finally I had to run task manager and kill firefox.

I thought you guys might like to know about this trick. Right click on the taskbar, select task manager.

Goto the "Processes" tab, check the "Show processes from all users"

Click on the words "Image Name" to sort the processes in alphabetical order, then look for your browser. iexplorer.exe, firefox.exe, etc. Click on it and then click on the "End Process" button lower right.

Sucks to have to do this, but it sucks worse to get infected by these ****ers that can't go get a real job.

I agree. Windows is entirely too hackable and too much temptation for those people who have no life. I can think of wonderful things that would discourage them if I could catch them.

man that sucks!!! Im glad you cought it tho!
I use AVG internet security, a computer geek friend of mine says it is the best defence against these pecker heads He is kindof a hacker but he dosen't do crap like that so I trusted him. So far I have seen it catch tons of crap it always tells me when it finds something it's pretty cool you should check it out www.avg.com
    Im surprisingly comfortable with it.

Just so you don't get a false sense of security, they are all entirely too hackable. Hackers just go after the one's in the majority.

I ran into something like this on my sister's computer. The program automatically installed itself and it eliminated any ways of removing it. I couldn't do it in the control panel, and i couldn't manual remove it. I couldn't shut it down or open it's folder. It had complete control over my computer, trying to force me into using the program. I had to do the system restore on xp, go back a week, and re-do everything. What a pain that was.

I know this may sound naive, but I have actually had better luck without any virus protection software than when I have had it. I have been virus free for 4 years now.

Is it possible that viruses are more prone to attacking machines with virus protection on them?

Not exactly. It's mainly what the user browses on the internet. Some websites contain hidden viruses and programs that you don't see, like porn, file sharing sites, etc. Some people don't visit these type of sites and never get viruses. Emails also contain viruses but if you don't receive forwarded emails and stuff then you shouldn't get hit by a virus. I ran four years of college with no virus protection.

Virus protection software is like Fuel System Cleaner. Using it keeps your computer/jeep clean, but with proper care and clean gas/programs, you don't really NEED to use it.

I would jump over to trendmicro.com and do the online virus scan. Housecall I think is what they call it. You might be surprised what you find.

I worked on a friends computer that did have anti-virus protection and her computer had over 120+ infections.

I loaded AVG from grisoft. I scanned via trendmicro, and McAfee's online scan to find all those viruses.

Anti-virus don't attract viruses to computers, computers connected to the Internet attract the viruses. I have read that an unprotected Windows based computer will receive several attacks within the first few hours it is attached to the Internet.

It's taken me a little while to figure it out, but I think I have.

JAVA was being used to attack my computer. Shockwave specifically. The attack seemed to be coming from one of the many Flash things that are displayed on my computer screen. I believe it may have been an adsense ad. I noticed the problem when the home page here would hang trying to load the ustream panel.

I went into my Control Panel > Java "console" to clear the cache. That's when I noticed the update button and hit it. My version of Java was from 2009!!!!

I updated Java to the most recent version.

Make sure you update Windows, and Java!
