    7 watt Baofeng.. 25.99

    http://www.mtcradio.com/baofeng-uv-5...d-transceiver/

Never heard of this model before and can't find anything else on it so am a little leary.
Considered getting it for my APRS setup, maybe the 3 extra watts would help.

I wish that there was a higher power vehicle mounted unit for that price. I'd buy it up in a heartbeat.

The newest version of Chirp allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the squelch on the Boafeng/Pofund radios. From the factory they have settings of 0-9, though the actual response seems to be more of on/off.

I plan on working on this tonight in hopes of fixing an issue I am having with my APRS setup receiving packets when I am not within 10 miles of the digipeater.

When running ARPS just run the squelch open. I know I used to do that when I ran packet years ago that way there was less of an issue with low signal reception.

I tried that before and it didn't make a difference, but might give it another shot.

However.. I think I may have another issue. I think the adapter cable to go from SMA to SO239 may be bad. I can pick up packets with the stock rubber duck and the radio sitting in the front seat. I can't pick up any with the radio attached to the 1/4 wave mag mount.

I may go with the straight SMA to SO239 adapter (no small coax between) and see if that helps. Really itching to get a 2m mobile, that way no adapter for the antenna and power to get out... but have a few things on my wish lists and just have to figure out what gets priority for the limited funds...

Would be cheaper to buy them (5R instead) individually and get prime shipping.

Not to mention the 5x isn't really compatible with 5R accessories AND isn't waterproof by any means.

Well it appears i have the radio/tnc set up well as I am sitting here at my daughter's school waiting for her to get back from a football game i have 15 stations on my display and have received multiple packets from each.. all with the rubber duck antenna and the radio sitting next to the parking brake from a digipeater 20+/- miles away.

Edit: Had 30 stations by the time I was done.

Yeah it's amazing what a radio can do with there isn't 20,000 screaming idiots running 100 to 300 watts on a band that has ionospheric propagation.

    Default Baofeng UV-5r+

Haha yup. That's why CB has become almost useless except for very close range.

Edit. Watched the video. Very cool to see it survive all that. For a more real world test I have a 2 year old UV-5r that was spent the past year mounted to the handle bars of my motorcycle being used as my motorcycle mobile radio and it's still ticking today. That's a year of heat, UV, vibrations, and rain showers and it's still going.

The volume knob is just an on off switch now i.e. It's only off or full volume but that happened before I ever mounted it on the bike.
