    LOL!!
Yea I have WAAYY too many hobbies already, I'm just glad these Baofeng units are cheaper than most other HT's.....
WHEN I FINALLY get my license, I wont have to come out of pocket with an arm and a leg to use 'em.
(might just be the cheapest hobby yet!)

The UV-5Rs are 26.49 right now.. The UV-82s are 30.49.. Baofeng (now known as Pofung) also now offers a mobile radio though only in the UHF band for 129.00. I think they would do better to offer it in a 2m/VHF version. It is a knock off of the TYT Th-9000 which is offered in a 2m version for about 110 with "Free shipping" (not Prime shipping so who knows how long that would take... 130-140 with Prime.)

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the BF-9500 can do. If like something like the uv5ra with more power, a remote faceplate for better mounting options, and cross band capability. Oh and APRS capable.

The BF 9500 is just a UHF single band radio.. no cross band, no remote faceplate.. etc.

TYT has a quad band mobile for about 280. Covers 440, 146, 50, and 29 MHz (70cm, 2m, 6m, and 10m) but has the remote head, cross band, etc.

Most dual band radios when running APRS on one "side" can not do voice on the other "side" at the same time. IMO a separate APRS set up would be better and for you a full size mobile with 40+ watts for APRS would probably be best. However it does appear that Fairbanks has a couple digipeaters and an Igate for APRS.

What I need is that capability when I'm not in Fairbanks. Cell coverage goes to crap just a few miles outside city limits.

There are a handful of 2m repeaters around Fairbanks but traveling too far i to the wilderness I would contemplate a license upgrade and a HF mobile radio. For vhf it wouldnt hurt to keep a collapsible yagi with you for at camp or emergency, so you could direct your signal and get more distance over a vertical antenna.

Now that I've finished school, I need to get back into studying. I made a deal with my wife that she would take the tech exam when I take the general exam. The collapsible yagi is a smart idea.

An extendable painters pole might be an idea as well. The one i use is 6' collapsed and 12' extended. I put my tape measure yagi on top of it.

I have heard of the tape measure yagi but I need to do some YouTube research on them.

Yep, General license is in your future. HF is about 500 mile minimum distance unless you're talking local.

I use a Motorola SM50 for APRS in my XJ. It runs 45W full time…but I think the tracker is currently dead.
