Sounds similar to what mine is doing, except mine stops making the squeeking or whatever sound, when I apply they brakes... so I'm pretty sure it is something brake wise... I'm hoping to tear into it this week...

Yep thats your source of the sound. That u-joint is completely shot. No you wont need a new axle, just a Ujoint. Very easy to replace, just like any other U-joint. Your gonna have to pull your axle shafts to replace them, but that is very easy as well. U-joint ranges from 9(cheapest) to 16(best) at autozone. As worn as that one is, id replace both sides

I'm hoping once I get a chance to jack mine up it'll be that easy to diagnose the issue.. it is really annoying, especially when driving through town with the windows down, listening to it echo off the buildings!!

There is no way to replace the u-joint while the axle shaft is still in the housing. Now since there isnt any c-clips you dont have to remove the diff cover. You just take off the brake caliper, rotor, and then remove the 3 bolts on the hub bearing. The axle shaft will then slide right out so that you will be able to replace the joint.

All the XJ front D30's are non c-clip axles.

Since your just pulling the axles and not the diff cover, you shouldnt lose and fluid and no gaskets will need to be replaced. To replace the u-joints all you will need to buy is the ujoints.

Also FYI you will need a 13mm 12 point socket to get the hub bearing bolts out. The bolts dont have the regular 6 point head on em.
