Whenever I run my XJ for anywhere from 1 min to 2 Hours when i shut it off i hear a ticking sound from the valve cover. What could this be.

Are you sure it is from the valve cover or could it be from the exhaust header?

Not sure about that, but generally the ticking sound is common in exhaust systems on shut down

Just an idea but it could be caused by heat, either the heat build up (cooling system no longer running) or the cool down of the engine. Ever had a house that creaked at night when the temp changed outside? Maybe something along those lines, and that is likely what Steve is referring to with the exhaust as well.

Speaking of houses making noise, I have a heater duct that pops when the heater kicks on due to the change in temp.
