    Default AW4 front seal replacement.

My jeep is pouring tranny fluid from the front of the transmission. Has anybody here replaced the front seal on a AW4? Cause I see 2 different seals when i look it up. One torque converter seal, and a front pump seal. I guess ill just buy both and see which one I need. As bad as its leaking, the problem should be easy to spot.

    Jim

You will need both. The pump section holds all the stuff in, planetaries and clutches. It needs its own seal. The torque converter seal looks like a pinion seal.

Can you replace the pump seal without opening up the trans too much..ie just a few bolts?

    Yes

If you were to rebuild, the pump is the first thing to come off, then the rest of the stuff.

Ight thanks. We will see what happens. Gonna yank it out tomorrow. Just hoping the problem will be very obvious. I am a pretty good mechanic but when it comes to tranny's or carberators im pretty stupid.

That's just inexperienced Jim. I have to keep at least one book open when I get into stuff like that. I've done a total of two carberators on cars and one auto transmission. I can do it, but what a pro would do in one hour will take me all day.
