Make sure the underside where the antenna stud mounts is clean too.
I run my antennaon the drivers side because I was running a long antenna and the drivers side kept it out of the trees on the...

^^ there ya go. Cheap and easy. Just have to buy.. or build an antenna mount. Most commonly mounted above the taillight on either side.
