    Without getting into all the details... there are only 2, maybe 3 places in CHINA that most of the inexpensive winches are made.

    IMO: you should buy a winch from a retailer that has been around...

    Common issue with the some of the original Smittybilt winches. Contact Smittybilt tech support and they might send your brother a new end to his winch that should fix this issue.

    Common issues with those are the Permanent Magnet Motor - somewhat cheap to fix. Most starter and alternator rebuild places can fix them. It's been a while but I think the last one I had rebuilt was...

    IMO: Currently: there are only a select few winches offered that are worth paying attention to their name.

    Even main stream winch companies...
