after you do what 4.3l said , try checking your vac lines make sure they are all hooked up & not just hanging around.
i finally was able to get to finishing the repair.
turns out that the rubber hose on the fuel pump inside the tank had vibrated loose and since these fuel systems arent volume pumps but pressure...
i just pull over & get out & start to cry when this happens to me. lol
update....dropped fuel cell. cleaned it out with mineral spirits & steam. replacing sock & probably the pump too.
i got it running but the fuel pressure is screwy.
bypassed & replaced the fuel...
isnt there a tag on the axle? it should tell you the gear ratio & spline count? unless someone didnt put it back on after a service. that happens.

i'm with 4.3L on this one. you may have to fix that exhaust because those dual O2 sensor'd vehicles can be pretty tricky even with the fowler method.
even with the "tricked" O2 sensor turning off...
update: after chiseling my way to the fuel filter & fuel pump...filter replaced it was bad but not enough to kill it. fuel pump at 28psi at the rail.
ordered pump & cps for tomorrow.

1992 xj laredo, 4.0, aw4,4x4,dana 30 hd & ford8.8.
about 2 weeks ago the ignition started acting up with the occasional super fast "cut out" or "hiccup" at lower rpm's. changed the ignition...
if the bottom of the "pumkin" on the axle looks rounded then it's a dana 35.
if it is shaped like a stop sign then it's the 8.25

OH FREAKIN GREAT!!!!!!!!!! LOL just today the 92 "sadness" stalled on the beach...cranked & cranked finally caught. sounded like some POS ford v8 until the comp made some adjustments & then ran fast....
they can "reman" the ecu's. or if you have a '91-'95 xj the ecu's are pretty much universal & boneyards have them. depending on which "96" xj you have the ecu may be specific.

we dont get alot of ice here in florida. my jeep club ( all xj's, 1 token yj) all run the same traction set ups...auto lockers in the rear & electric in the front's.
8.8:1 on a stock ho 4.0
this an test trick too...take the radiator cap off & get the motor to operating temp & watch for the water to "bubble" or blow back out of the filler neck on the radiator....
wish you lived here in central florida. family owns a machine shop we rebuild engines. in the process of building 3 4.0L strokers now. should be 4.6 or 4.7 when done. rebuilds here are the best way...
where did the previous owner get the work done? i wanna be sure to never go there. sounds & looks like the system is clogged up .

my best friend has a 99 & like you said dang thing is a pain to work on cause you have to use year , color, & moon phase specific parts LOL.
