Where I live in TN, the only thing they do during a smog test on a car as old as mine is a sniffer test. They also check the gas cap for leaks. But no wiring is connected or disconnected.

But this still begs the question of how to remedy a timing situation when there's no way to adjust the timing because of how it's controlled by the PCM.
