Followed the same idea. But made my connections with connectors for railing for staircases. And did get Thule bars.

Cheap spring clamps
For getting springs of or on use strong rope on two sides of the spring and about 4 time looping and a wrench to shorten the springs. Did it yesterday on a XJ 2001. Worked great.
