I used to work in a radiator shop 40 years ago, we repaired heater cores also. I would guess that it has a small pinhole leak.

On my 92xj the heater valve is on the heater...
On my 92xj the heater valve is on the heater hose. you might be able to see it move by having someone run heat control on dash back and forth a couple times. on some you can move by hand to check...
