righto petrel heads...why would this jeep be so thirsty........should be about the same as a stock xj.....255ks a tank of gas..shit the old xj on 33s stock gearing was around the 400 mark....

5.2ltr, 4.1 gears, xj auto, 33s.........must be something i could be checking , trying......

please help or i may be forced to sell and buy a red yo-ta 4 banger...:shocker:

bigjim350

Is it a magnum motor? Post anothe pic of engine. The plenum on the magnum motors is known to leak. The best way to check is to take off the throtle body and look into the intake and see if you can see any oil puddling in there. The bottom gasket on those intakes is not a if, but when type thing. And will cause bad gas mileage. This might help ya.

Do you have a cotter pin in it? If so it seems the only way it could work loose is cause its wearing out. You should upgrade to the double shear style

4.3LXJ

that be it steve.........stupid set up really

Yes, but it was cheap to make. :bang:

There is a couple of things I would suggest since stuff costs so much down under, and because your Jeep is left handed. You can get a No. 2 tapered reamer, or better yet borrow one. If it is not too bad, you can ream it out a little and make it round again. The other is to cut out that portion and weld in a piece with the taper in it. You might do some searching and see if anyone has any in builder parts. These are commonly thick little sleeves with the taper in them. Last resort, cut one off a steering knuckle and weld it in well.

cantab27
07-29-2012, 10:12 PM
righto gonna cut it off and make one up.....on a side note , rebuilt starter ...done the test thingy ..works great ..put it in the jeep and wont engage fly wheel...pulled it test it works but not in the jeep..........have power to starter same reading as battery on the volt thingy i brought......tis doing my pretty little head in...

It pushes the bendix gear in and out

cantab27
07-31-2012, 08:26 PM
cheers thought so...so still have same problem then...wont engage the flywheel..testing it she works........solenoid can only go one way ?????

4.3LXJ
07-31-2012, 08:31 PM
Yes. Take your bendix gear apart and clean it. If they get crud in them they get sticky and won't work. Don't use any oil or grease or it will attract dust and mud and get sticky.

cantab27
07-31-2012, 08:35 PM
done all that steve ..starter works when tested on the ground......as in jumper lead trick.......hook it all up in barbie and wont engage the fly wheel....just does the spin thing....did work before pull down....kind of ..was full of rust,,,have done my xj one before with no problems but this time shes a no go..

4.3LXJ
07-31-2012, 08:37 PM
On some starters the bendix gear is partially engaged by the spin of the starter. Then disengages when the engine kicks. Make sure the gear spins on the shaft freely

shes woundring all over the road....under gas and when letting of the gas..have no sway bars in but tis more to it than that.....have a funny feeling back diff housing is bent...:rolleye0012:..played around with the toe in /out did get it a bit better......bump steer not sure what it is but hit a railway crossing at 30mph and the front end got the shakes bad....its getting front diff moved forward in new year...then into a shop to make sure everything is straight...everything under her is new and tight ..track bar is sweet as...still useing it in the mud :D so kindda cant to much untill the new year........

4.3LXJ
12-23-2012, 11:35 PM
Mate, that is the classic death wobble. Check the track bar and drag link to make sure they are parallel and the same length. If they aren't, it will do that. Check the castor angle. Needs to be about 5° or it can cause that too. It is probably off after going higher. I still think you need to bring it by for a suspension tune up.

Mate, If it was me I would take it apart and replace clutches and it probably would be good to go. Unless you wrecked all the bushings on the shaft, then that would do it. If the oil gets cooked, it looses its friction properties. New clutches is cheaper than buying a rebuild

If you go with any mopar based V8, then you are stuck with that same transmission. There were earlier V8s based on the AMC block that were very cool. 304, 360 and 401. But they didn't have too many auto trannys behind them. Amber has one in her Waggy. But, consider this for a moment. If you go to a standard tranny, then you have possibilities. And consider the type of wheeling you do in water and mud, I think a standard tranny would serve you much better anyway.
