Well I guess a rifle would be considered tech, albeit low tech.

So do we have any knowledgeable Remington 700 folks out there? I've been wanting one for years and finally picked one up this past week.

I knew you could spend a LOT on a scope, but little did I know what a lot was. I thought $350 was a lot for a scope, yes I know I'm a noob.

I think I have a good base, Remington 700 Varmint, bull barrel, .308.

I was going to change the stock, but holly crap all the ones I like are $700, one was $850 and I couldn't tell if it helped, or hurt the overall accuracy of the gun!

I can get a nice locker for $850, yes I know but I can't pop zombie heads at 1,000 meters with a locker.

The purpose of the gun is just fun to shoot, and I would like to use it to deer hunt on occasion.

Maybe I should concentrate on a decent stock and a moderate scope. I doubt any deer kills would be longer than 200 yards. Maybe we have some deer hunters on here that can clue me in.

This is one that caught my eye...

MDT TAC-21

Here is the actual TAC-21, the butt and the pistol grip are standard AR-15...

I have a Rem 700 in 30;06 with a composite stock and a Leopold (sp) 3x9 scope. Longest shot that took a deer was 120 yds.

I carried around a bull barreled .243 deer hunting when I was in the service. It was tough back then! My last deer rifle was a Ruger M77-UL, in .308. It kicked real good, but on the bright side it weighed 6-1/4 pounds. Carried real nice.

What you have is not a woods rifle. There are lots of places here in Texas you can make a long shot. Put a good scope on it, get a few brands of ammo (assuming you do not reload), and see what that rifle likes. You should be able to touch three rounds at 100 yards. Sounds tough? Those rounds are going to be far apart by the time they are 300 yards down range.

Oh yeah, that bull barrelled .243, it is a Ruger M77 (I like the Rugers). It is still in my gun safe. I got it new in 1974. Bull barreled rifles shoot good, but they are not carry rifles.

Yeah my understanding is the bull barrel being thicker can withstand more repeated firings without starting to deform, hence maintains accuracy shot after shot.

Personally I wouldnt get a bull barrel on a hunting rifle. I see them more for a competition gun, the centimeters of accuracy you would gain just wouldn't matter as much in the field. If it were me I'd just use the money I was going to spend on a bull barrel on practice ammo and a slightly better scope than intended. BTW excellent choice and I want one someday.

Well I ordered an inexpensive scope and mounts. At least I'll be able to use the rifle. This will give me plenty of time to research and see what direction I want to go with it.

I ordered 1,000 rounds of Wolf .308 from Cabelas(sp?) for $369, but they canceled the order since they were out and no longer able to get that ammo. It's good since I really didn't want to spend that much, but I did like the idea of the ammo costing 37 cents a round. Compare that to the other stuff that is over $1 a round!

Well at least the gun safe looks a little more full! lol

order a couple boxes of various brands/types of ammo to find the one your gun likes best. Check out www.sportsmansguide.com they have decent prices and always fast shipping.

I don't think you'd get the consistency you'd want with 1000 rds of Wolf. Put Wolf in your AK, not your purty 700.

Well from the reviews I was reading it was 1/4 inch at 100 yards (if I'm remembering correctly) so for just getting used to the rifle and having a LOT of extra ammo I think it was worth the price.

I bought 500 rounds of 7.62x39mm Wolf ammo for my AK, and it was nice stuff for the price.

I had to drop my oldest daughter off at work (at the mall) Friday night so I stopped in at Bass Pro Shop and picked up some .308 win ammo.

First off DAMN it's expensive, but all of it was, second off .308 isn't a very popular round at least based on the searching I had to do to find it.

I know I know 30-06 is more common, but I knew what I wanted when I bought the gun.

So if you're keeping score at home, I now have a rifle, a scope, bullets (only 20) and no way to mount the scope to the rifle! I'm still waiting on the scope mount to show up.

The plus side is I should have a fully functional weapon though, even if it isn't sighted in. I guess I should order a bore sight laser for it, and resume my search for some cheap ammo. You know fun ammo, I'll save the expensive stuff for the important non paper targets.

I don't know if you've checked out The Armory yet or not, but I got 1000rds of 9mm and 1000rds of 5.56 for $400 when they were having a sale.

So I'm sure they've got somewhat decent prices on .308.

We use the heavy barreled guns out here in Wyo. for hunting coyote's all the time. My uncle has a Remington 700 in a .204 caliber with a heavy barrel. He has taken yotes out to 500 yards with it. But I think we have to take much farther shots here.

mssmoorenburg recommend a scope that I received and put on my 700 night before last. Looks great.

I received 200 rounds of some cheap "Bear" ammo.

I ordered a Harris bipod, it was hard to pick. 6-9" or 9-13". I went with the 6-9"

Now I'm looking at spotting scopes. Anyone have any recommendations? I don't want to appear too sure of myself, but if I can find a place to shoot I'd like to try my hand at some distance shooting, just for fun. What magnification would I need on the spotting scope for 500 to 1000 yards? The range I use has 50 to 300 yards available.

I've been out there with a 22 rifle and a AK-47, but this is my first long range weapon, so it's all new to me.

Ranges around Houston (American Shooting Center, Hot Wells) have spotting scopes on the line or will 'rent' you one if you have a drivers license. No fee.

Buy a couple boxes of ammo instead of a spotting scope.

Get yourself a good pair of 10x50 binoculars. Thats what I did.

American Shooting I knew about, haven't heard of Hot Wells. Have the ammo. I figured they'd rent me one. ;) I figure I can see where the bullet went with the scope at 100 yards, I was just concerned if I could see it at 200. The drop on the .308 is 0" at 200 yards, so I was going to site the scope in at that.

I'll google Hot Wells, but just in case where is it located? West Houston?

It is pretty simple moving the innards from one stock to the other, I mean once you done it once! Anyway I was more than a little disappointed to find out that I was missing a part. It was my responsibility to buy it but MDT didn't mention it nor did MAGPUL. Basically I need a tube that allows me to connect the butt stock to the receiver. Receiver extension tube. Not the adjustable one that everyone sells either.

We learn by doing.

Well after much searching I wasn't able to be 100% sure that the rifle extension tube I found would work correctly. I didn't want to wait a week only to find what I had was wrong. This is just my inexperience from having any dealings with AR15/M16 weapons.

I called Magpul, and they told me what I needed, but not exactly. The recommended I call Brownells, the same place I got the MDT TAC21 stock (she didn't know that though) and tell them what I was looking for. After a few minutes on the phone with Brownells tech support I am confident (well 99% but I'm picky) that the $16 tube I just ordered is what I need.

So now the waiting game begins again. At least I have the hard work out of the way, but no going to the range this weekend.

:link: (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=17502/sku=231-000-048/Product/Butt-Stock-Extension-Tube)

Specifically is to be used on a Remington 700 short action, MDT TAC21 stock and a Magpul precision butt stock ar15/m16 (mag307)

It is a DPMS BS09 or Brownells part number 231-000-048. You'll need a screw to attach the butt stock to the tube, my Magpul came with this screw.

I've been kicking around the ideal of a long range rifle myself and the very rifle you choose has been on the top of list of rifles. My purpose for it would be for long range shooting only.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the scope you got. Rule of thumb is something like. Spend 50% the cost of the gun on a scope. Not to say if you had money pouring out of your pockets you couldn't get better. But rifle scopes hit the $2,500 mark.
I wouldn't sweat the 1000 yard mark yet. It's said to fluid at 100 yards. Once you have that. go to 150 or 200 yards. So on and so on.
I don't even think we have a range around here (Bay Area Cali) that has anything longer than 100yards.
Have fun with your new toy.

Yep, well I'll learn as I go. The website for the outdoor range here fairly close to the house says they have 300, 200 and 100 yards so I figure that'll be a good start.

My plan is to get it on paper at 100 yards, then move to the 200. The .308 is supposed to be 0" at 200 yards. I want to get the scope sited for 200 and then I can adjust up or down based on the .308 trajectory table. I know, like I said I'll learn as I go. :D

Before going to the range I needed to get a gun case. I measured the rifle then I went to BassPro. I found a nice(ish) hard case that had the right dimensions, or so I thought.

It had two sets of dimensions and the model I picked up well the 2nd set of dimensions was what I got. Too small. There was a very limited selection of cases at BassPro so I just jumped online. I found a black soft case.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_jDiaGTTQXg/TzDl9EvsV5I/AAAAAAAABuI/m0KCMwvg_q4/s800/20120207_023744.jpg

Oh, and it allows you to carry it by the handle or by the hidden straps so you can wear the case like a backpack.

LizardRunner

Nice soft case. Tony you will not need a spotting scope till you are shooting past 300 yards. Once you get out there, Tasco and Bushnell make some very nice spotting scopes for not a huge amount of money. Here's a page with some http://www.spottingscopes.com/spotting-scopes/8405+8406.cfm?source=msadcenter&kwid=spotting%20scopes%20target%20shooting&match=e Oh yeah the .308 is the round the M24 sniper rifle is chambered for it is considered good out to 1000 meters (1083.33 yards) but I have used one out to 1200 meters (1300 yards) Also don't forget the nato cartridge is 5.65 or .308. My personal longest Deer shot was measured by range finder to be 1132 meters and it was made with a modified M24 this gun was chambered to use a 460Weatherby case with a nosler .308 projectile charged with 40gm of blue dot powder. I have the ok from the wife to aquire an other rifle :D I'm thinking of going with a 700 BDL in 7 or 8 mm or 300 Win mag. I already have a nice 8.5-25x50mm Nik scope sitting around.

I also found out that the range not only has 200 and 300 yard ranges, but 400, 500 and 600 yard. The cool think about the 400-600 you drive your own vehicle to the target. I was cautioned about how muddy it gets and if you get stuck you are on your own. I commented I'll be able to shoot and off road at the same place!

I have both a rem 721 and a 700 and the only thing I havent read in this post yet is about the safety. They are known to FIRE WHITHOUT PULLING THE TRIGER if they get just a little dirty in the action when you flip the safety OFF to unload them. Even the designer of the 700 BEFORE the 700 was even made redesigned the action to fix the problem. But it cost 5 cents more and rem didnt think it would be a problem. "several people and kids have died because of it over the years" So they didnt fix the problem. They do offer the redesigned triger now but still sell them with the old one too. SO look it up and make sure you get the right one OR make sure its pointed the right/safe way when you undo the safty. I just dont use my safety I unload the gun or flip the bolt up so it cant fire. I dont want to kill someone or scare away the deer LOL

HAving been a custom gun builder for more than a few years just some notes on the Remington 700. By the way I'm not knocking your choice just things that are problematic with the Remington.

1 The action is not square: that is the threads that hold the barrel are not square to the face of the action. neither are the locking lugs usually square with the action face, neither is the bolt face square with the action face. Correcting these things is called blueprinting the action.

2 The barrel is OK for general shooting but to get the max out of it a new barrel of higher quality is needed something like a Lilja where the chamer is cut with a match quality reamer and a proper crown is cut.

2 The safety and trigger are not all that great a Jewel trigger is adjusta le down to 2 pounds and will break perfectly.

Now some suggestions. I personaly like the McMillian Arms A2 stock it is basically the one the military uses on the M24. Steel bed your action in the stock you like and leave it there for maximum accuracy. also pillar bed the action and use a recoil lug (It goes on the barrel and is tightened between the shoulder of the barrel and the face of the action.

Now in my opinion you can pretty much forget factory ammo, although with some experience things can be adjusted to make it shoot better. Usually the bullet is set back too far and needs to be brought forward so that the bullet engages the lands correctly. Best is roll your own I like Sierra match bullets best 168gr in a .308.

As far a scopes go I happen to really like the Nightforce brand. The optics are more clear than say a Leupold MK5 or even Ziess. And yes you will spend and should spend as much for optics as you do for your rifle.

I know most of you reading this are probably thinking I'm just a know it all. Let's just say it's from experience on the 1,000 meter firing line and longer ranges.

By the way if you want better balistics at that range look at a 300 WinMag.

More information is always more better. Thanks for posting it. I already have the gun, so I'll have a look at the scope you suggested.

I wouldn't mind finding myself a M24E1 or XM2010 as it is coded with the Army.. I know the 700 has it's own issues, but from everything I've read online it def. seems to get some good reviews... I don't like the idea of owning a weapon that might randomly fire just because..

At least the 700 is pretty modifiable weapon system... There are quite a few upgrades out there for just about any part of that gun.. Maybe one day I'll pick one up..

I have a Rem 700 wrapped in an Eberlestock M11 Stealth Chassis and absolutely love it. We don't have any long ranges out here, but I own enough land that I have a personal range that stretches out to 880 yards that I can shoot out to safely. 700 is about all we've stretched out to with hand loads.

I currently have Leupold glass on it. After buying the chassis I couldn't afford NF glass on it. That is the next gun purchase though. I've used a buddies NF glass on my .338 once and they are definitely the cream of the crop as far as glass I've used.

I haven't ran into any issues with my 700, but I've modded about everything you can.

Everyone with a model 700 needs to check for the trigger recall on their gun.

I don't think I could pay more for a scope than I paid for my jeep lol.

I was watching a video on the Steiner Military 3-12X56 but looks like the price has already gone up on them.

I know how important having a good scope is but why does it have to cost as much (or more) than the gun?!?!?! I know why, but still!

At the risk of sounding like a psycho, when I'm ordered to shoot someone, cheap is not a viable option. ;-)

When you're "ordered" to shoot someone aren't "they" paying for the equipment though? ;o)

Theres a pretty popular trigger replacement for the 700 that is about $150 at Brownells, I forget the name of the company that makes them. They were backordered when I was looking at them. So no trigger replacement yet.

Do you ever decide on a scope? I still have the crappy one on there, but it can see farther than I've shot it so I think I'll stick with it until I need something for much further away. Practice then spend.

I'd like to either replace the barrel with a shorter threaded end for a flash hinder or a silencer. I guess it could be either. That long varmit barrel I have on there with a silencer would be so long, well it would be like making my way to the bathroom when I first wake up.

there was a recall on 700 triggers... may get a new one for free?

haha!! reminds me of our gimmie rule on the golf course. If its a dick's length or closer, its good. some guys try to pick it up from the fringe.

I'd love your range, wheeling and target practice all in one afternoon.

No problem... Only know about that one as I've looked at those before for a rifle I was helping a friend build for a wounded warrior... From what we found online they are pretty decent optics...

for optics, try a trijicon fiber optic scope, awesome for low light shoots.

I just use eotech halographics for my toys but the hunting rifle has a 8x32 swarovski. 30-06.

Have you tried magpul industries? primo firearms and parts.

if your going to be doing lots of range shooting I suggest reloading your own rounds..you can really dial in your round!
