Transmission is all back together and shifts great!

Had a crappy time to make it shift at all, apparently all the manuals for this transmission leave out one key step, there is an indent ball that goes into the reverse shift head, all the manuals leave this step out, then the ax15 will shift into reverse but not disengage, locking the transmission.

That's good to hear that you got it all back together and ready to go.... If you think about it... them forgetting to put that 1 minor detail out of the books is pretty smart on their part if you think about it... cause then the general consumer would be like WTF?!! and take it to the dealership or shop, and pay good money to have them tear it down and take care of that 1 step... and then charge you a crap ton of $$$ for it... It's a big scam!!!

While I was laying under Mort removing the horrible t-case linkage,

I noticed some denting,

Apparently Mort flexes a bit too much! Who knew!
And what shall I do about this? Cut out the tranny tunnel, weld in some new steel? perhaps add some bumpstops?

Or flex the crap out of Mort and let it clearance itself? Ya I like the last option too! :)

Oh and here is a pic of the new Novak bracket in place.

Because if the rockers were yellow they would be too fast and float over the cam decreasing performance!

And if the winch line was yellow it would yank the bumper right off of a jk when pulling it out!

Having 4WD means getting stuck in more inaccessible places!

4.3LXJ
06-20-2016, 04:17 PM
Not wrong installation, just wrong line. The spool can get hot due to heat from the motor traveling into it by conduction. Some lines, such as Warn, have the first few feet out of another material that is more heat resistant. Glad you reminded me of this

Pookapotamus
06-20-2016, 04:59 PM

Obviously you need a bigger winch.

The little motor on the one you have,

... cant handle the weight ... of all that yellow paint .. :p .. :D

Line type/issues as 4.3LXJ mentioned, aside ... The winch is a proper one ... or a no name import ??

I despair at the heat that motors of imported chinese things like vacuums, drills, grinders etc., generate.

Might be worth opening the case too - to ensure everything is free and serviceable ... especially if it hasnt had any use for a while.

ohhhh and btw ... if you do get stuck somewhere ... and the winch fails,

... I wouldnt wave that leg at approaching traffic - in the hope it will attract the offer of a lift .. :D:D

Pookapotamus
06-21-2016, 08:19 AM
It's a tabor 9k, with an M8000 gearbox, just rebuilt it before I added the synthetic, I must have the brake in the drum installed wrong.
This winch was 5 years old when I got it, it has never made a pull, it was just rusty from being in the rain, that's why I tore it down and rebuilt it.

Well today was a bit of a bummer! Was re hooking up the front winch, the one I swapped from the rear bumper, this was in hopes that maybe it would not get too hot and my new synthetic line would not melt on it, no luck, ran it for about a min, temp on the drum got up to 130 f, not even going to try to spool the synthetic.

So this means either I go back to wire cable, or buy 2 new synthetic winches, sigh!

I did some research and found you just can't spool synthetic on to the older cable m8000's, :(

See the problem? Dual inlet??? WTF? Check the website, nope does not say which end is inlet, says "muffler inlet config: offset" and " muffler outlet config: offset (opposite sides)" which means single inlet dual out, right?

I chose this muffler for a lot of reasons, it was supposed to be dual out, it works with the flow of the stroker, good const, small dia pipes, it's physical size, and apparently the quietest I could get.

It's not reversible, and is one of the only mufflers that actually fits in the space available, so what do I do? It is just an air chamber muffler, even though it's advertised as filled with fibreglass, the only thing that makes it non reversible is the little spring loaded valve that helps with drone, why it has one when it's supposed to be a single outlet is beyond me. And one of the "inlet" pipes is a glass pack.

So do I preform surgery, remove the valve and reverse it? Or do I send it back and try to find a muffler that fits into my application?

And I hate returning stuff! Sigh!

You know it! I got the 50sq ft roll that should do the trans tunnel, floor over the exhaust, the entire roof, and a few doors. That's my plan anyway. Well, maybe something else instead of the doors but you get the point. I've got some work to do before I get to applying it though. Really hoping it helps with heat coming up from the trans and exhaust as well as the roof baking since mine's a dark color. The noise reduction will be a big plus too hopefully.

When you get around to a cup holder, which we all know is the most important feature, talk to me. I made the ultimate cup holder which will hold anything from pop cans to 1 liter bottles. I also think I might have the answer to the ultimate mud flaps that go on and off in less than a minute

As promised. While I am waiting on photobucket, Here is another idea for the console. I am going to take out the parking brake handle and go to an old school foot brake. Then I will take out the arm rest and compartment and replace it with this.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZI45YA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2SQXMUXKVSD7D&coliid=I2AOTIDQU2QVB1&psc=1

It is about the same size and I would replace the top with the pad from the console. Latch will be magnetic, like the one on the fridge. That way I can get a cold one on the trail without stopping and opening up the back and getting into the larger fridge I carry.

Here is the cup holder. Standard Jeep cup holder designed for cans and Xlarge cups from the drive thru. Adding the dual ring gives me five sizes that will work from cans up to 1 liter bottles. Center is void for coffee cup handles

Well mort got a small upgrade today, I blew a front signal a while back and only had a clear bulb to replace, I like the amber ones so of course this bugged me and I decided to order led replacements.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170302/cdda9ec948eaa92e5759af3ce3966029.jpg

And the lenses are rather done, so I cleaned them up too.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170302/6d01e052d4619451671cc34255d4b3b7.jpg

The inside of the lenses are all corroded, looks like I will be replacing them soon. And apparently I can't post videos from my phone, oh well just have to try to take a pic tonight.

So..... I got my resistors for the led signals, turns out that's not the problem, I believe it is the bulbs, but I persevered and did them anyway, not what I was looking for but worked just the same. And changed my entry lights too, big change there!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170318/ac941d4cef22aa6c003800fc5f782c38.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170417/11dd906c66060c4778e7e4f5f06a79bd.jpg
Rusty contacts eh? Methinks water got into the fan control unit.
Ok fine, cut all that garbage out, tested fans, all three work good, fine I'll just wire up some new relays and activate them off the factory electric fan circuit, time to find parts!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170417/c1724f4ce60e19a71a492cf99b4eb169.jpg
Well crap! Nothing good in the wire drawer, off to princess auto (the harbour freight of the north) just want some cheap parts as this will not be permanent.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170417/8fd9cfa969d72f503521418f1f9575e7.jpg

Got everything wired up, brought jeep up to temp, no fans! Wait.... the stock electric fans are triggered with the A/C, nope still no fans! Silly Chrysler pcm! Ok switch fans on with acc power, turn key fans com on! It's not ideal, but mort is drivable!

Maybe I can butter the wife up to let me finally purchase the haltech and get good fan control instead of buying a new fan control unit.....

Pookapotamus

Went for a longer drive today to north Calgary and back, still kinda amazed at the change these injectors have done to mort. Best way I can explain it is, mort no longer feels like the 92 tractor I though he was, feels more modern, just cleaner throttle response, quieter, actually quite present to drive, don't get me wrong he was always fun to drive, but now it's just cleaner. Seems like I don't have to put the pedal to the floor just to move. Very happy with this mod, glad I looked farther into it and did the research.

I have always had a leak since I put the dual remote filters on mort, I think it was due to cheap aluminum fitting, the threads were good but pitted, even pipe dope would not seal them.

So I had enough of that! Picked up some jb weld, pulled the remote filter housing off mort, cleaned everything really good, doped up the threads and screwed the fittings back in. Set it in the sun to dry for the afternoon cause it's a beautiful day here in Calgary. Tomorrow after 24 hours of set time I will reinstall and hopefully no more leaks, then I can take mort to the wash bay at work and run a bunch of degreaser into my frame rails where all the oil leaked in to!

This fits close to the hood and seals via a rubber door seal cut to fit, so that the intake sucks from the hood vents. Do I think this will make a big change, no it is more to suck cool clean air instead of engine bay air. Just one thing on my list of things to do.

No cowl intake, I like him the way he is.

And it was the power steering pump, blew the front bearing on it. New one in and all is good.

Well it was laundry day here at chateau pook, and while I was doing that I went out to the garage, sighed at the big puddle of power steering fluid under mort, then pulled his air filter and got to work designing a cold air intake.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170613/1e674f8d3dc2d3dbbb647d4e14ac4ce3.png

Made sure the filter would fit,

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170613/29d947a378d73c3326d1287393f58138.png

And built a cardboard prototype to make sure it would fit,

Yes but I run a dry bag over the filter so no water gets in, the filter has been below the vents since I built mort, never had a problem. I am also considering tuning a shield over top of the filter to shed water as well.

Did you tell her it was just a minor project? :rolleye0012:

Pookapotamus
06-21-2017, 03:32 PM
Meh I might have eluded to it being easy...

I started today by pulling the rear axel, I needed to relocate the rear truss so that it was closer to the pumpkin, so that on suspension compression it might not hit the new piping, fixed a few other issues while I had it out.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/6d0ac650b5ce44399659a0986d73c1c7.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/3af698fdace9d8fa475a7c2b8917dd81.jpg

Then I had to massage morts floor pan ever so slightly.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/85d7846668cd91a6e815b2c9a5817564.jpg

Just enough so the muffler could fit in the drive shaft tunnel.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/0408b8b793141da6953a5524775365c9.jpg

Then I had to spend 20 mins finding my old glasses cause getting up from under mort after a full day of being on my back, and having not eaten since breakfast I was a bit tired, ended up planting my face into morts mirror, breaking off an arm of my glasses.
Apparently I am too lazy to put my contacts in!

Well it's in, my welds leave something to be desired, but it's not leaking, it's a little quieter not what I was hoping for but will be much better in the cab as it's no longer hard mounted. Clears everything pretty good. But I still have to relocate my lower shock mounts.

Looks like it's coming along nicely! What's the benefit of going single into dual instead of single into another large single (other than it looking cool)?

Pookapotamus
06-23-2017, 03:07 PM
Well there probably is no benefit, but I don't have the room to accommodate a large single all the way back, so smaller dual gives me the flow I am looking for.

And after taking him for a drive, I am really happy, flows much better than before, more torquey, sounds great still a bit loud, but if I drive nice it's quiet, but it's hard to drive nice when he sounds so good accelerating!

Still have to do tail pipes but for now it's good, and might have to find shorter shocks, kinda bottom out a bit.

Oh! And it even seems to be running cooler!

This will include new doors, hatch, rear lights, suspension overhaul, removing the rear swing out, possibly removing the stinger, fresh paint, and a whole ton of other changes and improvements! Looking to drop a min of 500lbs!

So stay tuned while I gear up and get down to work, I will post as much as I can and keep everyone informed of Morts transformation!

Power windows work, the old mirrors will fit,
But I was kind of hoping to go with newer mirrors, they are not power, but I might be able to swap the power module over.

Also been playing with the idea of ditching the rear windows and drenching in my rotopacs.

Mort is looking good... Not sure on how the Apple connect thing works, but on the trip I'm on right now, I got a chance to play with a Big Horn edition Ram, and connected my phone to it via Android Auto... and all I can say is, if I keep my Ram I'm definitely looking into one that supports it... Only played with it for about 20 minutes... but was pretty nice... I like the frenching in the Rotopax, as the rear windows aren't really worth anything for wheeling, other than something easy to shatter out!!

The stock wiring harness has always looked extremely ugly to me and I was pretty sure there is a lot of unnecessary wire in there since I have cut a lot of factory equipment out, so I started dissecting
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171103/e9245cf12d66c0785e473db2d54bc09d.jpg

And just as I thought, all that wire routed to the pass side can be shortened or eliminated.

Will look much better when finished!

Well another day of playing with my wire!

Mounted the oil filters again and ended up relocating the coil.

Sure looks a lot cleaner with the fuse block gone and that 2” wire bundle not in the way.

The stock harness is garbage! They have grounds running from one side to the other, then ones cross crossing going the other way, what a waste!

Man that looks clean... Maybe one day I'll tear into mine to rid it of access stuff.. just to have the nice clean underhood... not to mention being able to mount stuff you want under there once the "junk" is gone... Maybe when I pull the engine to swap it out or to rebuild it.. But probably not for quite a while... Until then I'll just keep enjoying your guys builds...

Hey Dana, did you use a fence to make those nice straight cuts. I always shake and wobble like a drunken sailor after a three day bender when I make them

Ok trying to hunt 2 door parts sucks big time! Although I found heated power mirrors on quadratec for $44 usd!

No luck for window regulators though.

Have you compared them to the 4 door regulators? There is at least a possibility they are the same. I have the power mirror switch in mine, but no power mirrors yet. WJ mirror mounts are close and much more usable so I will be going that route for power and heat

Ya 4 door regulators are single track, 2 door are double track, I think the best bet might be to order a universal kit.

Got the computer and fuse block remounted, now I can complete the wiring between the two and mount the new fan controller.

Do you have the pics to remove pins? Makes that a lot easier. I can see that there will be several pounds of wiring gone just because of the proximity of stuff

I do Steve, and I think I will be able to have the entire Jeep with all accessories run through the one box!

So I borrowed my buddies boroscope, and found a clean spot on number one piston, did not see this on any other piston, don’t really know why it’s there.
