hello all, well my buddy gave me a pair of new drums for the rear brakes. my question is i want to install the new drums and my shoes are 85-90% good still, now if i install the new drums do i need to put new shoes??? would keeping the old shoes on with new drums be a problem???

That depends on the old drums and the shoes. Was the old drum scarred or worn unevenly? How worn out is the old drum? If the old drum is very worn, or scarred then you should replace the shoes. Otherwise, if at 90% then you can get away with it, but not recommended.

well what happend was the last time i had the drums turned, they were not evenly turned. i had them turned and i installed new shoes and bled the braking system and adjusted them. but when i would brake i would get loud screeching like i had shot shoes on. when i took off the drum after bout a week the very tip and very bottom of shoes were making contact with the drum.they were not making ANY contact in the middle of shoe. i changed out the shoes 3x's with same results. also when braking i would feel a tug, then turn freely then tug kinda like they would grab then let go then grab etc... hardware is new, wheel cylinders are 1yr old. any thoughts??

You should change shoes then. Your drums were probably turned too far down

on a side note... 1996 cherokees have 9" drums correct?? any way of noticing the difference between 9" and 10".. alot of autoparts stores could not answer the question...also mine have no fins on them.

IIRC, 10" are narrower, and one have fins. I think that 9" was standard unless you had a fleet (police) Jeep.

well mine 96 cherokee country are 9". my buddy works for a wholesale distributor for autoparts and we compared drums and shoes.. the 9" drum had a smooth finish and the 10" had ribbed fins.. the 9" shoes were shorter in legnth and wider in width. the 10" were longer in legnth and alot narrower in width. that was our findings in comparing side by side the two sizes, maybe this can be helpful to others..

Around here we call them AutoZoo. I went in for steering parts once and had part numbers. And they still managed to give me the wrong TRE.

I never go in there. The counter guys must be minimum wage, changed often. They don't have any knowledge of parts whatsoever. All they are good for is plugs and polish
