they worked great and only cost me 18 dollors in 1-5/8x1-5/8 strut from the hardware store only took about 30 mins to put together they do need another bolt tho to take the wiggle out of them but i was in a hurry before the steel supplier closed

What are you using to do your notching, or are you just free cutting the tubing?? Either way it is looking good.. would love to learn how to weld so I could build stuff half as nice as this one day..

i use a tube notcher that fits in a drill press

like this one

http://www.jd2.com/images/Product/medium/62.jpg

i user a cheaper verson i got off of ebay tho
the cheaper ones have an issue with striping the threads out on the hole saw and the brass bushing wears out but i bought it for a single project and didnt expect to build a bunch of these
i modified mine so it dont strip the threads out now and the bushing seems to be holding up good so ill see how long it last before i buy JD2's verson

Thanks for the compliments

That is a nice notcher right there.. I have been looking at the JD2 stuff for quite a while.. I will probably go with a Ebay setup to at least get started.. that way no big loss if my retard side kicks in and I can't learn myself how to do it all.. LOL.. Hey out of curiosity, what size, thickness and type of tubing are you using??

all the tube is 1-3/4 x .120 wall ERW tube
the bottom tube of the carrier is actually 1/4" wall tho as i slide a peice of 1-1/2x.120 wall tube inside the 1-3/4

as for the ebay stuff as i said the notcher is probably fine for a job or 2 i wouldnt get it if you plan to do a bunch of tube work spend the money once and get the JD2 notcher

as for a bender do no go with the ebay or harbor freight 100 dallor specials
i have one and id probably pay someone to get it out of my garage

stick with the JD2 or Pro Tools benders or youll more then likely be out the money for the cheap bender and a few peice of kinked tube
just from experience
i even tried the fill the tube full of sand and make small bends to get the bend i wanted and it still kinked

in the end you really do get what you pay for

just my 2 cents

even tho my camera was taking a crap in the last few pics you can see that with the extended sides that a gusset was requested
the jerry can (even tho my can didnt fit the holder being used) covers the sheet metal but i think itll still look good all painted and installed

I would like links to where you got the parts for the bender. I am looking to add a bender to my fab shop and that looks promising.

That bumper is looking good!! I like the adjustable spare tire carrier. that way it'll cover the different tire widths, and backspacing for rims...

Hey Ray.. check out these links for a bender similar to his: Gottrikes (http://www.gottrikes.com/Tube_Bender.htm) and Pirate 4x4 (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376183)

the gottrikes bender Bluedragon posted a link for is the bender i have
i ordered the prints from him and choose to build style B as it looks to be easier on the parts with the added bushings
my lathe guy was out of town so i also bought the bushing set from got trikes for 60 bucks
all steel came from my shop he provides you with a detailed material list
the ram came from harbor frieght which he provides part numbers for it cost me 79 dallors but i seen they just had a sale and was selling them for 39

the pins came from mcmastercarr again he provides part numbers in the prints

and he provides the list of harware youll need

i suggest 2 things
do as the prints say and read them entirerly first lol there little things youll catch that will make it easier altho it isnt hard
and 2 get a digital degree finder you can zero out as he suggest i know harbor freight has one for 30 bucks but itll be worth it in the long run to get a good one the first time

and thanks Blue for posting the links and comments
that bumper has been shipped to new jersey now and im waiting for him to send me pics of it coated in the POR-15 and installed

Nice job,
I built one of these Tacky benders from (got trikes .com )but i just haven't bought any dies yet. Where did you get the latch? I want to build a roll bar and put it in my jeep.
Is this a 1 3/4x6 die?

eking81
10-18-2011, 07:56 PM
yeah the die i used for the bumpers is an 1-3/4 die with 6" CLR

the latch your refering to im going to guess is the gate latch for the tire swing

the tire swing latch is a Knu-Vice 2001
its rated for 2000 #'s
i modified the latch to include a linchpin safety to keep it from coming undone

when adjusted right its rattle free and secure
