Ok so I have been working here and there with the Red XJ (in between designing and making the tube doors and other thing!?!?!)and wanted to share some pics of the work as it comes along. Now I'm not always good about snapping pics while working especially if it is custom) so they will be pics of it at different stages. The lift is a 6.5"-7" Custom with parts from Rough country, Rusty's, Iron Rock offroad. Some have been made by me. Like the leafs, I have two sets that or from unknown full size trucks one of which is HUGE. I'm mixing and matching leafs and could get 10" out of the leafs if I wanted. OK here is the pics

Whats your plans for this one when you are all done?

Glad you asked. It will be a trail rig that will be able to be driven around town. It will have about 7" of lift with some 35"x15.5"x15 tires. I'm going to see how far that C8.25 will go, then I have a 8.8 in the wings. D30 in the front with 4.88 gears and I have not made a complete decision on lockers but it is looking like a lunch box in the rear to start and a selectable in the front. I'm going to do the inside, rocker panels, and wheels wells in bedliner and then probably repaint it red so I do not have to do the door jams and stuff. The I have a I6 that needs to be rebuilt that I will start making a stroker after I get the XJ running.Other stuff will come as I find what I like.

OK it is coming together a little at a time. I have so much going on and then my shitty Harbor Freight Air Hose went to Hell I cut and repaired it 5 times before I got pissed and throw it out. Now I have to get a new hose any suggestions for a good hose that can be outside alot? Any ways here are some pics of the Pass. side which is done. My biddy is coming over this week to help me finish the rest, Thank God.
Here is the pass. side I also just cut the fender and straighten out a couple dents. so it is still rough and needs to be finished but it is not even bolted down yet.
http://i691.photobucket.com/albums/vv276/bigbadxj/Jeeps/jeeper11.jpg
I have to straighten this part of the Unibody out(XJ was in a minor front accident) but after it is straight I was wondering what some guys have done to make this area stronger(added bracing, steel plating, etc..)

Got a bunch done tonight! I got the front back on tires and would have had the rear also but I miss judged the size of the hole in the leaf spring bracket made for the center pin (too small) so I just have to drill that out a little and i will be ready for a test also. I am no where close to being done But I have alot of stuff together for testing to make sure I like the lift size and other stuff then I will take i back apart cause I have to replace the brakes and clean everything up before I start on the body for paint. hen I will get some tires and wheels on.

OK I got the pass. rear together and a tire on for testing to see how much lift my 1/2 ton springs will give me and I was very surprised. It looks to have given me almost a full 6"-6.5"!!!! I was looking for 4.5"-5" so this is very surprising. I will have to take it all back apart to clean an paint them with some of that tractor paint, add the spring clamps and I need to add another stock main leaf to the pack cause the 1/2 ton leafs or a little short in the rear of the pack which will make it weak and maybe break. But I was very happy to see that my gamble worked out. I also have gotten the chance to see how much this jeep need maintenance, I will have to replace all the brakes and it looks like all the U-joints. Better I fix this stuff now before I put the 33"-35" tires on and every test drive have something go wrong you know.

Oh yes I just like to jump around,Ya know. I'll start one thing then get to a point when I need a part or bolt that I do not have on hand so I'll start on something else. Then I'll get that piece and go back to the other thing. Or I;ll get to a point that I do not know what to do so I stop and get different opinions before I start it again. On that part I'll be cutting the rest off and welding in some new pieces. The using seam sealer on the inside and I'm going to re-do the wheels wells ans undercarriage with rubberized undercoating. If you have a coating gun you can get the pro stuff for $20 a gallon.

OK so now I know my leafs will work I took them back apart to clean, paint and get the shackles off( PAIN IN M ***!) even though I'm not going to need them for lift I want to put some betters ones on and I'm going to put on one of those shackle box's. I also pulled the axle out to clean, paint add gears and ZJ disc brakes and realized it needs a pinion seal and axle seals. So I may look for a 29 spline instead of building up a beat up 27 spline. I got pics I'll post asap. I also got a RC Track bar for $70 which puts my 7" lift cost up to $300!!! HAHAHA. But I still need the shackles and shackle boxs. Then I will do the front axle, hack-n-tap, bed coat the inside/ rocker panels and rubberized coating in the wheel wells and under carriage. Throw the 33's on and she how she runs.

That's right, I was not. but when I found out about special expensive insurance to get the roof redone every five years from hail damage and that I was OK, I was five miles from tornado alley, I was wondering what he was talking about.

Just so you know, lots of family from the Houston area.

I should be coming in to some money and a little tax money, so I hope to finish thi thing up. I will be getting Iron Rock H-n-T with the rebuild drive shaft, then I have to get some new wheels I would like to get some with a 4.75 BS. Also some .75" shackles & spacers to bring the lift to 7", disco's, brake lines, front shocks, put on the D35 disc brakes, maybe some axle shims (not sure which size I will need with the H-n-T and front DS if any). I think that should be enough to get me running. I will be taking pics and update as I get the parts.

They came right off after that but I am a little nervous about the rear cause of the gas tank but it are not wanting to com off! Going for the axle tomorrow and Then the fun starts, I have to have the axle set up the way it will be driven so I can measure for the cut on the TC shaft.

Picked up the axle today again thanks to 89xjgrey got it to the garage and got my brake lines on it and cleaned up some. Then I pulled up my big boy pants and jumped under with the torch and got that rear line off and the new one on with little to no prob. I may have to re arrange my leaf pack a little though with the shims and shackles, but the shackles are a most I think for any leaf spring lift cause it lets the spring move alot better. So I am almost done know the list is alot shorter now, Thank god!

I got the axle in and had to take a leaf out of the pack today it measured at 9.5" in the rear!! So I took one leaf out and got it to around 7". Then I measured and cut the shaft for the h-n-t yoke and started drilling the hole. I hate drilling, out of all the things there is to be done drilling is my most hated and I always suck at it. I have six bits for each size 1/4" & 5/16" and I went through 2 of the 1/4" and got about 3/4" of the 1 1/8" done( peck drilling and using lube so it doesn't break) before I got tired of it and stopped for tonight. I also put on a new Muffler I wanted to try cause I did not want to pay for a flowmaster and did not want it so loud with a cherry bomb so I got a thrush welded muff looks like a cheap flowmaster and it sounds great for $30!! I hope to get this thing to the to the alignment shop by the end of next week.

OK So I finally got this thing out of the garage for a drive today and I was very pleased at first cause the only problems I had with the ride was the steering wheels was off center and the exhaust was loose, other than that it was really good drive with just a drive way alignment. Then I saw a huge white puff of smoke from under the hood and I got pissed when I saw that the upper power steering hose decided to bust and was spiting fluid ever time I turn right and my front lights are not working for some reason? They were working fine when I put the header panel back on. All in all guess it was not the worst first ride I have had but not what I wanted, also it was raining and cold as hell so I did not get pics yet.

The shop I took it to is were a friend of mine works and he has XJ's and has been offroading a little longer than me and he said he had it right and that once the tires are balanced it should be good. Also the Rough Country Track Bar is good but I think this one would be alot better for a lift 5.5" or less, I may have to sell it and get one more suited for the bigger lifts. I have thought the caster was off from the go, I thought that is why the springs look so stiff? But, the guy that did my alignment has done alot of Jeeps and offroad trucks and he said it was with in 5*-9*?I was under the front today and while on the ground everything feels and looks stiff, the SS is garbage and the sway bar bushings are trash , but other than that the TRE's and CA and track bar bushings are all brand new or have less than 5 k on them. But that stuff is not cheap so I will have to deal with what I have for a little while. next I will be doing what I can do which is bumpers, tube doors, and do the bed liner on the outside and floor board. As for the IRO track bar it is the best bar I have seen for the money I got it on and I love it even with worn out un balanced SSR's I got no DW!!!! If you reduce the castor it will give you more tendency for death wobble. The castor, tilting the axle back, puts pressure on the tires to want to be toed in. Just think about tilting the axle back 90* with the pinion down. That would be all of the weight of the Jeep forcing the tie rod ends toward the center. 8* is much less, but is enough force to want to keep things centered and can make up for some sloppiness in other parts. If you have positive castor on the other hand, the tires will be forced to want to toe out which could actually cause wobble in stuff that is tight. Tell your buddies. They need to know too.

What I think is the problem is that people measure caster in different ways at home but do not tell the specific way they are measuring. I did another measurement today with the angle finder on the top of the upper ball joint and it was 5* and the 8* measurement is what I get if I put the angle finder on the circle beside the diff cover. I got my tires balanced good today and I have no DW. I still have some vibes and other problems( like shitty tires:boohoo:). but it is good on the road and VERY GOOD offroad.

OK well the other night I got the new front axle U joints in (took forever only because I busted two getting them in).So now I have replaced every part in the front end and it feels alot better but still is not tight enough. I still think that my caster is off. when I put the angle finder on the top of the top ball joint it shows around 5* to the right of center on the pass. side and around 5* to the left of center on the driver side. That is positive caster right? I thought you wanted it to be negative. I have never been great at the alignment thing, I always had help with that in the past.

You are measuring camber. Castor goes the length of the Jeep. You should have a that 5* tilted toward the back

Big Bad

No, Caster is the alignment in the vertical longitudinal plane of a motor vehicle's wheels Camber is the is the angle made by the wheels of a vehicle; specifically, it is the angle between the vertical axis of the wheels used for steering and the vertical axis of the vehicle when viewed from the front or rear
This is Camber
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b8/Cambe_angle.svg/251px-Cambe_angle.svg.png
and this is Caster
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f8/Caster_angle.svg/600px-Caster_angle.svg.png
I know that to much caster will cause Death Wobble and to little will cause the jeep to wander.

My problem is that I have been told 20 different ways to measure it and even more different answers of what I should have. Right Now I think I have to little cause it wanders and I really want to find out what is the RIGHT way to do it and what I should have.

I found out the lower bolt was made for a LP D30 So when I switched I got a much better caster and kept a good pinion angle. I still do not like the Rusty's short arms over all, but what do you expect for short fixed arms?? I have no doubt that after better steering, better tires, and some Long arms the ride will be great. But now I want to move on to some armor and body fixes and mods. First will be the Tube Doors and Bed liner.

I may not have been clear, the lower pics or of the mounts made by COSXJFAN that I plan to copy. I have not done them yet but I will as soon as I get the steal.

do you know it that set up will work with a tow package?

No reason why it wouldn't. The bumper would be separate from the receiver.

As 4.3 said it sits over the a stock receiver and you can use longer bolts if you keep the old receiver on there but the receiver I am putting in should work just as well if not better than a stock one.

I may cut the angle a little more I do not know what do you guys think ? Am I being to picky??

Replaced the valve cover gasket in order to save some oil!!! I also welded on of the ends on my rear bumper ,but I forgot the camera. Glad I did cause I ran out of C-25 for my MIG and I have been out of Argon for the TIG for months so instead of being smart and waiting I broke out the old buzz box and did some stick welding for the fist time in years. I now remember why I got the MIG, the welding was not that bad but I forgot just how much BS you have to do to clean up the welds so the are always ugly and have to be ground down instead of just making a good looking weld and painting it.

Well I have a line on some axles from 1977 f-250 4x4 high boy!!! I just had a set of '78 3/4 sold out from under me, so i am not getting my hopes up. I have not started on the long arms or steering cause after one trip to the farm these axles have to go along with the short arms. From now on I am telling everyone to think twice before doing a lift over 3.5" with out long arms and never over 4.5".

Do you have another location for pics, because most of them on here are not showing up.

I'm curious, about bumper, how much did that tube steal cost you? and what thickness is it?

I looked and the pics all worked for me but all my pics are here http://s691.photobucket.com/home/bigbadxj/index rear bumper is under the fab section and the rest are under the '92 xj section. As for the steel so far most of the stuff i have used for my stuff has been free or I get it from a local place that has a section with a variety of shorts of all shapes and sizes and you just weigh it and pay it by the pound.
