I have a CB antenna mount for 97 to 01 XJ's. It is made of 3/16 steel and mounts behind the passenger tail light. This mount is a direct bolt on, it uses the existing 2 top tail light bolts. There is no drilling required. The mount is painted black and comes with the mount to screw your antenna into. This is a really strong/solid mount. It is welded on the inside and outside. The outside weld is grinned down smooth. For the mount, antenna mount, shipping w/tracking is $37.
Here is a picture of what you get.

And here is one with my 3ft antenna. Antenna goes above the roof just over 1 foot. Antenna not included in sale.

Ahhh yes, that's the picture I was wanting to see. The whole bracket. Now it makes sense. That should be quite sturdy.

Sturdy is what you need off road certainly, and even on road from time to time.

Why did they have to change the tail light mounting design.. would have made things like that so much easier!!

Maybe someone can take their tail light off, draw a pattern on a sheet of paper and e-mail, or mail it to you.

Same as the other mount $37w/shipping, tracking, and screw in antenna mount. If you don't need the screw in antenna mount then its $33.

The only question I have, will the antenna being that close to the body have any effect on the antenna tuning?

I made a bracket like that close to the body for my old FJ40 Tojo 30 years ago & it stuffed the Transmit Amplifier in the CB caused by RF feed back.

Yeah it does. How much depends. Of course the more RF you pump out the more RF gets sent back to the radio. 4 watts out it shouldn't be a big problem.

Tony, correct me if I am wrong but if the antenna is far enough above the top of the vehicle it would not cause as much of a problem. An example would be a 102" whip versus a 3' Firestick. The majority of the whip is well above the top of the vehicle where as the 3' may only barely clear the roof line.

Idk what the mininum distances should be but just to give you an idea with with my set up(3' antenna) the antenna is basicaly the same height as the radio antenna. Dont know if thats a good or a bad thing but seems to work good for me.

It's really just a rule of thumb. The 3' antenna is basically a loading coil. It's going to act differently that a full quarter wave antenna.

Everything is going to reflect RF, metal especially. SWR is a ratio of the RF going out to the amount of RF coming in. The best way to see how antenna placement affects reflected RF is just to check the SWR. Of course to get the real antenna SWR it should be checked at the antenna.

Remember what works for a good SWR doesn't mean it works best for reception or transmission.

Again this isn't as important if you are NOT running illegal RF amplifiers, and if you are talking to people that are very close to you, like part of an off road group.

Yeah thanks Mudderoy for that, I was running 30+ watts on SSB so that must have been the reason for my problems back then.:noevil:

is there diffrent ways to check the SWR??? the only way ive had mine checked was up by where the cable mounts to the CB but then again i have a mag mount so if there are diffrent ways my options are limited.
