Just got done with my cb antenna mount. It mounts behind the right rear tail light. Uses the tail light bolts so I dont have to drill into the body to mount it. It has a 3ft fiberglass antenna on it. Trying to post picture of it but doesnt seem to be working.

where did u get ur braket from?

I made it! Its made of 3/16 steel. It gives enough room to run the wire behind the light. Its really strong I was shacking my whole jeep with it!

This is a common way to mount larger HAM antennas and not drill big holes in a vehicle. I found this mount on Amazon that is similar Amazon.com: FireStik MK-204R Adjustable "SS" Door Jamb Antenna Mount Mini-Kit: Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31SsZxqhvsL.@@AMEPARAM@@31SsZxqhvsL

Another place you can get it... :link: (http://www.dxradiostore.com/servlet/the-406/ANTENNA-DOOR-HATCH-JAM/Detail)

As you can see from these pictures it's adjustable depending on how you mount it.

Does that one bolt to the tail light bolts? I saw something that looks similar but you still had to drill new holes.

I have no personal experience with it. It looked to me to be a universal thing, so I suspect it wouldn't match up to the tail light holes. The one you made does it tie in to one or two bolts?

It follows the contor for the top of the taillight so it can use the top 2 bolts. I wanted it to look clean and avoid having to drill and put srcews in. If there is enough interest I could make more.

Oh that's good then. Looking at it from the outside I was thinking it was only one tie down.

Nice job on the bracket !! Motion off road makes one almost exactly like it and even mounts the same for those of use without the metal working tools.

To bad you have the older body style I would of made you one for [edited] and the mount that the antenna screws into. Dont have access to an older body style right now.

Generally speaking for highway use you want it on the passenger side as the metal mass make the signal directional. This would direct the signal forward and to the left or towards on coming traffic. Gotta have that smokey report! :D

I never thought of that. I was just always told to put a cb antenna on the right side if your not putting it on the roof. Makes sence tho.

Oh and I forgot to mention that this is a general rule. Each installation can me different.

Radio Shack used to sell a field strength meter, I think it was a SWR meter with field strength built in. The idea was you could walk around your vehicle and see where the strongest signal was. :D

The roof middle would give you the best omni-directional pattern but even that would be oblong because of the metal forward and back.

When I have conversations on 20 meters for example, I could see the signal fade in and fade out as I would turn onto highways that where going in different directions. Like from East to South. My antenna is on my rear passenger quarter panel.

That is the type of mount I have for my 4ft. CB ant. right now.. and it work, but you have to drill holes for the bolts.. You can get one of the four bolt holes to line up with the top tail light bolt, the rest you have to drill and install some bolts.. Just don't use self tapping metal bolts apparently.. because mine ended up pulling through.. so I think I am going to be going with xj98's mount.. as that was the style I wanted in the first place, but everyone is always sold out of them!!

I mounted a modulator on a mount just forward of the op picture but could not get the swr down and out of the red, i guess that the body was reflecting the signal back to the body.:bang: What is the swr like with that mount?

Can you shoot me some info on the bracket?

I'm also curious why the passenger side is better. My thought would be the driver's side faces oncoming traffic and would reflect your signal towards oncoming traffic instead of off into a field.

The signal "generally" follows the path of the most metal. That would be diagonally across the roof. So passenger side should direct the signal (both send and receive) towards the on coming traffic. Again this is only important if you want to talk to the people down the road so they can tell you about traffic conditions, speed traps, etc...

I don't have that particular mount but I have mine mounted in the same location on the driver's side with a 102" whip. I have my SWR down to 1.1-1.2 while standing still and 1.3-1.4 while moving. I believe this may be due to the majority of the antenna being above the roof line, which is what you really need.

Also I run my antenna on the drivers side to try and keep it out of the trees due to it's length, tip is about 12.5' above the ground.

Cool, I think the driver's side is safer on the trail. This is based on I see more broken mirrors & tail lights on the passenger side than the driver's.

I'd like to get a mount for the tail light, then a 4 foot fiberglass antenna on a spring. That way I have a bit above the roof to even things out.

If your looking for best send/recieve, the roof is the place to mount a ground plane antenna. that said, I'm going to be mounting mine in the hood area on the passenger side simply because I have a mount that I can make work there with almost no refab work.

That's a fairly common place for 2 meter HAM antennas. The mount can be done where it clears the hood and mounts between the hood and the fender. Nice thing is no visible holes if/when it's removed.

I made one like the Behind Tailight on the White Jeep. Made mine from 3/16th steel plate also. The Angle Mount will be Alum with a 1/2 hole for Antenna wire connector.
Will post pics when complete. Mine will mount on the left since my jeep parks in a Carport
right side Antenna would be to high. Left side perfect.

Mounting CB Antenna. The perfect place for a CB Antenna is the center of the roof.
This makes the whole top like a ground plane. But Whip and taller Antennas strike everything within range height wise. A friend of mine who is a Radio Tech for Lloyds Electronics near Jane Lew WV. Told me that info also he said the right rear corner of
a vehicle is best for low mounts he explained the signal waves throw forward. He also
said that when he installs Business band Antennas on vehicles he uses either roof mount
for ones that are less than 12" tall. And rear deck lid on sedans for ones that are up to 20" tall. He mentioned State Police and other Law Enforcement us whip Antennas in WV due to the fact of tall mountains and deep valleys. In my opinion where ever you put the antenna and it works for you thats where it shoud be.....

I have seen Police cars that have upwards of 6-8 antennas. But FBI and Hush Hush agencies only use 1 or 2 mounted low.

The right rear is typically advised because the signal is skewed forward and to the left (driver's side)....which would put it towards oncoming traffic on the highway. Mounting on the left rear skews the signal forward and to the right, but if you aren't on the highway a lot then it really just depends on your preference. I prefer on the driver's side because if keeps it out of the trees that are typically planted along the sides of the road in town. Of course then you have the divided roads with trees down the middle also... and the drive-thrus... but you can't run a 102" whip and NOT hit something.

Looking through this thread because my last night outing took out my bumper mount for my 102" whip.

Is anyone still making the mounts for behind the taillights? That is reachable?

A guy on Cherokee Forum used to make them. I PMed him afew days ago and never got a response.

I've got some 1/8th plate left over from fixing my subframe. I'm considering cutting a piece down to fit behind the tail light, and then score it to bend it over at a 90 degree. Then just run a bead with my cheap 110 flux core welder down the folded score and put some gussets where it bends to protect the antenna connection.

You can then use off the shelf parts for the rest of the mount.

Take a piece of 3/16" steel... heat it up, put a 90° twist in it... drill two holes for mounting and one hole for the antenna...and viola!
Here's one that I did on another Jeeper's XJ in my garage last spring....
(shows the install of it on this page of his build thread:

You could get the raw material at any metal scrap yard or from a home deot/lowes near you.

I'll post a pic in the AM, mine was just a truck stop mount fastened to the factory rear bumper...I crossed a steep-sided ditch and drug the rear a little and ripped off the cable, but the mount held. A 90 degree connector would have made it though....
