Ive been on this site for 2.5 years now and I just realized that I havent really seen a majority of folks jeeps...
This isnt anything special and doesnt have to be a contest for the coolest flex or the muddiest jeep basically its a facebook of XJtalk jeeps
basically just post up a single pic showing what your jeep looks like NOW and you can update your picture whenever you opt for a change in appearance like a color change or something that we wouldnt recognize your jeep unless you showed us
here is mine

did you alter that pic? that coloring looks awesome... if you DIDNT alter it you got a perfect timing on that picture
Also how did you make latches for your tube doors... Mine suck...

rugidone
08-11-2011, 09:16 PM
it was a halfass attempt at hdr with a point n shoot camera.

My latches suck too, currently its a wirelock pin that drops around the stock latch pin, the foam around the tube stops the rattle.

Im thinking about welding a hitch pin thats cut to the B pillar and using a hitch pin holder... kinda like I have now but tht hitch pin will be MUCH stronger than what I have now

what I was meaning was a joke saying that the differential is on the same side however folks from down under drive on the right hand side of the vehicle therefore the "passengerside drop" was the "ha-ha" part of it... but I suppose I went to deep
anyhow when SITTING in the vehicle the port is the left and starboard is right

lol my girls ask me. "Do you notice all the people looking at the Jeep?" I tell them no, I don't generally look around to see what people are looking at. Funny thing is I didn't lift it to make it look good, but as soon as I put the lift tires and wheels people would stop and tell me how nice it looked.

I don't generally like the wood stickers on Jeeps but yours looks really nice like that.

I was looking for something to beat around in a found it about 4hrs from me. Didn't realize how rare they are. Being an 87' it is the last year model that was 100% AMC.

4.0 Multi Port Fuel Injected
AW-4 Transmission
NP-242 Select Trac Transfer Case (Full Time 4x4 w/ Shift on the fly)
Dana 44 Rear End
Dana 30 Front End
Air Conditioning
Leather/Fabric Seats
Power Windows and Door Locks
Fly Windows on Front Doors
Electric Antenna
Intermittent Wipers
Tilt
Cruise
Rear Window Defrost and Wiper w/Washer Fluid to the Rear Window
Dual Dome Lights w/ Map Lights
Lighted Mirror in Passenger Visor
Electric Seats - Driver and Passenger

EVERYTHING WORKS

I have the Original Dealer Window Sticker and Service Records - thought that was pretty cool!

Nate, I am surprised you don' have some special kayak rack on that.

Well, there's really no need. My kayak works just fine with the factory luggage rack. Those kayak carriers are a few hundred bucks. I just use a little nylon rope and tie her down. Works fine. If I wanted to haul two kayaks, I'd need some sort of rack, but I'd build it myself. I wouldn't pay for what's out there. I feel like they're overpriced.

Ultimately, I want to build a nice light kayak trailer. It will haul two kayaks, and have a long box down the middle for rods and paddles. A second box across the tongue would hold the rest of my gear. With an easily removable set of uprights (the plans for which are floating around my head) I could haul four kayaks.

That would allow me to just back the trailer in the barn and leave it loaded all the time. No loading or unloading of anything. Just hook on and head to the water.

One of the reasons I haven't lifted my Jeep just yet, other than I just don't wanna stop driving it :-), is that it sure is easy to put that 16 foot long 75 pound hunk of plastic on top of it right now.

Maybe once I get my lift installed, I'll be motivated to start on the trailer.

That is probably going to be a snow day project, though. The fishing is just too hot right now during the fall fattening for winter to be inside fabricating!!

Only the drivers side of the cowl is open. Passengers side has a top.
Its a "pocket", exactly like they described.

A couple of observations. First, this system uses a specialized filter that requires oil on the fabric, like the K&N. This might be OK for the average guy. However, if you travel miles behind someone on a dusty road, like many of the trails we have here, this can be a problem with a filter you have to wash in soap and water and then recharge with oil. I prefer a dry filter like an AEM. Just shake them out and go for it.

Second, the stock intake is fine for just about everyone, unless you get into hard core off roading. Any water will accumulate in the bottom of the air box. So unless you are talking quarts of water, you are fine. But if you get into deep water, like up to the headlights, then you have a hydrolock coming. The other reason is amount of dirt you suck into an intake on a dirt road. That is why the Aussies use a short snorkel on most rigs. It is up high enough to not suck so much dirt in.

As for a cowl intake, yes it can be beneficial, up to a point. It is higher, it is a high pressure area. But I wouldn't want to use one where there is two feet of snow on the hood in the morning.

Are you saying the filter I have on now is garage? It uses the stock box lower and just replaces the upper with what you see in the pic. Do I need to look into a new intake?

4.3LXJ
07-20-2012, 11:51 PM
No, not saying that at all. The issue of intake replacement is a matter of need. A stock set up is just fine. However, once we push these rigs to the limits off road, then we might need to make some improvements. For instance, I have some favorite mud holes I go through on a regular basis in the winter. If it has rained recently the muddy water will come over my bumper which is quite high. A stock intake on a stock rig would suck about a gallon of muddy water into the engine. But not everyone goes through three feet of water and mud. Also, I use a dry filter because I have been know to take 100 mile off highway trips. So I don't want filter servicing issues, especially in the dark. All I am saying is that you need to pay attention to what you actually need here and go from there. So, do I have a snorkel? Half way there with the intake in the side of the fender at about 4" height. Mine will be built out of oval steel tubing when I get around to it.

I thought about going snorkel but I think there would be a lot of resistance in the tubing with all those bends (you will have to forgive me, I came from the racing world over to the 4x4 world). I would say that a snorkel increases your ability to 4x4 through high water but would decrease performance. Not to mention that if you are going to go through high water, intake is not your only concern. There is electrical and every seal on your engine needs to be tight.

Has anyone here who has put a snorkel on their Jeep found it improve gas mileage/performance?

bigjim350
07-21-2012, 01:48 AM
The resistance of the bends of a snorkle are more than regained by the ram air effect it has. Most folks I know have had better performance with a snorkle

Yep ... thats the real reason for them in the first place. Theres nothing like chewing someones dust on an 8hr stretch of road ... even a diesel tojo dont like it ....

Then it was found they could also be a benefit for water crossings ... and looked prettier than than the collection of tubing some of us, used to carry ...

... and then the definition of 4wding down here - changed into "lets go get bogged in big, deep puddles for fun" ...

... and everybody now thinks they need one ... :D:D

I thought about going snorkel but I think there would be a lot of resistance in the tubing with all those bends

In the case of the XJ one that has crinkle tubing wandering all over the place before it finds the airbox .... I'd agree completely. Amount of benefit compared to gains would probably average out a bit ???

The other snorkle style is better as it drops into the rear of the airbox ... but Im not impressed with how much inner guard strenth is removed.

Most folks I know have had better performance with a snorkle

Thats the general rule of thumb ... thanks to the cooler air intake.

Ive been putting off fitting a snorkle in this one .... until Ive made some space to get an airbox, into where you fellas have the brake booster.

... and X 2 for a plain ol quality paper filter ...

I opted for a cowl intake on the passenger side, there is a NICE area to drop a cone style filter and Yeah you can use a PVC intake tube contrary to what most folks say... what do you think OEM intakes are made from? Anyhow I had about 25$ in trial and error but the end result is VERY nice
here is a pic of mine inside the cowl, as you can see there is a little HVAC intake that my filter sits above which has a 2 inch lip so that means Ill get water in my HVAC before it goes in my intake, and as stated before the cowl cover ONLY has openings on the drivers side

Here's a pic of my "TWINS". ARNOLD on right, DANNY on left. Both are 96 4dr auto's with no rust. Arnold is a Classic, Danny is a Sport.
Arnold, the good twin, is now my daily driver. Danny, the bad twin, will soon be as bad as he can be with the addition of a GM LM7 V8, 4L60 auto trans, Clayton 6.5" 3-link lift, 33X12.5x15 ProComp mudders, and the necessary frame and steering mods and upgrades with a full cage ties to frame stiffeners. Arnold with have to patiently wait for now. Later.................

They are certainly my personal favorite of the "station wagon" Jeep Big Big Big !! I do however believe that you have a 2" lift on it due to stance hieght even with good angles lol lol . A spring over and 35's and they are virtually unstopable. Need parts ??? try BJ's best waggy supplier I know of.

I did the calculations a couple days ago and with a 3 inch lift kit and 31 inch all terrain tires I should get a total of 4.75 inches. I want to keep the tires at 31 inches no matter how high I decide to lift it because I would like this to be an articulation machine. Overtime I'll save up and get long arm kit, and convert the rear suspension over to coil overs. but for now good place to start is 3 inches at 31. Thanks for all the help by the way everybody, I've had more help on this form it two days than I ever had on the forum for Ford Broncos and I've been a member there for two years.
