Not being able to lock, or unlock your doors from the convenience of a push button can be frustrating. If you have an alarm system that automatically locks and unlocks the doors, well it can be down right time consuming as you make you way to each door to manually lock all your doors.

My 1998 has had the typical issue where the locks wouldn't work. You would hear them clicking but something wouldn't cooperate.

One day I was trying to lock my doors, and it was doing that typical click click click, then it just stopped! I kept pressing the button and nothing it was just DEAD (or D E D, DEAD! as we say in Texas). The unlock worked just fine. A friend of mine say "it's a relay" which I was a bit relieved since relays are just plug and play. Not these!

He was right it was a relay, but these relays are special order and INSIDE the passenger's door panel. Read below and see.

Two relays part # JJM1-12V-H11

:link: (http://www.mistersprockets.com/jjm112vh11-p-12390.html) $7.50 each

** Sometimes I think this goes without saying but... You shouldn't attempt this unless you feel comfortable in what you are trying to do. You could very well cause this part to fail and have to replace it fully. You also could start a fire if you don't do this correctly. A fuse would probably catch it but who knows you might have foil wrapped around all of those! rofl.

The 4 relays I ordered came in today. (2 Jeeps, 4 relays. Besides it's a min $25 order)

I took the inside passenger door to expose the PDM. I removed it, popped the switch covers off and took out the circuit board.

The relays are the black square-ish boxes in the middle side by side.

Estimating where the back of the relays are I carefully cut a rectangle in the plastic.

Using a screwdriver I carefully pry up the plastic I just cut.

Then I remove the cut section all together!

Heating up the legs of the two relays and using compressed air to blow away the molten solder I can use a small screwdriver to unbend the legs of the relays then gently remove them from the circuit board.

I put the new relays into position.

Then I solder them into place.

Testing!!!!

SUCCESS!!!!

Taking the PDM back to the bench I put the plastic door I cut out and then use duct tape to secure it back into place. It is plastic and non-conductive so I really wasn't worried about critical placement. I can't think of any good reason that this needs to be covered back up but this looks a little more professional. ;)

Now I just took this and put it back in the inside door panel, hooked up the wiring and the manual lock/unlock rods.

Popped the door panel back into place, and put in the 4 screws that secures it to the metal door.

That's it! I have both electric lock and unlock again.

First of all I would like to say thank you for the great info.
I was wondering if your PDM had any effect on your mirror controls or power windows. I took my jeep to a shop for this issue and they said that I would have to replace the DDM and the PDM at the same time because they work together. So now that the offending part has failed I wanted to check if there was more to the issue or if any of the windows and mirrors were effected prior to your repair.

Well since I didn't have the money to spend on a replacement I was trying to repair this unit. That changed and I stopped the debug/repair process and just bought a replacement from Rock Auto (or maybe it was Team Cherokee). It was about $70. I replaced the passenger side unit only. I haven't had any issues since.

I would push remote to lock and horn would chirp and some times the locks would work. I replace the pass door control now the doors all lock and unlock.
