Hello Fellow XJers!

I have a 94 XJ 2-door that I picked up for $150. The body is in perfect condition, not one rust spot on it, but the paint is just about gone (yay Jeep green!) The interior is shredded, dash is a travesty, steering wheel is loose, no horn/radio/AC/door handles, etc.

250,000 miles on the odo, and I think the transmission is shot (no 4WD).

Anyway, I'm looking to drop a diesel in it, but I have neither the time, tools, or shop to pull it off. So my question is:

Does anyone know a shop in South East Texas that will do a diesel swap on a jeep?

I talked to Diesel Toyz in San Antonio, and they only wanted $25,000 plus labor. I'm hoping for about 1/4th that price. Total.

Thanks in advance!

~Chris

$25000 for what setup were they planning on putting in there?? I don't know of any shops down in TX, but I know of a few up here that were way less than that to do a 4BT swap into my XJ... so I would def. search around... if nothing else look into some smaller shops that are reputable.. those are the ones I have been looking into up my way in the NE states!!

Any time you do a conversion, it is a lot of work. I would suggest something that would save you money. First, import an XJ from overseas that already has the diesel in it. They are popular in Europe. As mentioned, the link above has an XJ that has a VW diesel in it. I believe he was wanting to market adapter kits for this. He might be able to cut the cost for you. But you won't end up with torque monsters with either one.

I'm looking into the import / half-cut option now, and XJs with diesel are not all that easy to come by, and are expensive.

There are a couple of smaller shops nearby that "will try it", but I'm not 100% confident in that "try" part.

Thanks for the links. When I get kicked off I'll start a build thread.

If your looking for a shop to the swap I suggest heading north into Canada.

Diesels are plentiful up there and swaps are very common.

I have put a lot of research into doing a diesel swap into XJ's and the two most common are the Mercedes 5 cylinder and the Cummings 4BT.

I'm personally going with a VW 1.9TDI because I know them and the aftermarket is booming with swap parts to make it easy and cheaper.

I have not ran the diesel in my XJ yet but believe it will work out as I expect it.

The benefits I will gain running the TDI are a little over 100lbs lighter 250hp and 300+ torque.

I'm in Texas. South Texas. Canada is a country and a half from here!

I'm about 90% decided on the 4BT. They're fairly plentiful, and lots of local wrench monkeys work on them. It's just a matter of finding a shop that's hungry enough to do the work.

Will update when I have an engine and transmission, and a shop to do the swap.

Not to far then. Id volunteer the job but unfortunately I'm backed up with my work plus my customer projects. I know of a good shop that will do the job, but its in houston.

Maybe a CRD from a Liberty? Not sure that would be any easier or harder than the 4BT though..

I think if I were really to go for a diesel swap on my XJ, I would go for the 4BT in that there are so many more bolt ons already available thanks to his slightly larger 6BT brother... that will easily bolt on and give you way more HP/TQ output over the stock setup.. Maybe one day I'll actually have the money to put into doing this swap...

Diesel Performans was booked, but they referred me to "The Shop" in League City. I'm working out the details with them, and should have the Jeep there in a few weeks.

I've got $2800 in the engine/trans, and $3000 so far on the install. $150 on the XJ.

That is awesome that you found a place.. I hope they don't get too much higher on the price then what they quoted you and that they finish in a timely manner.. What trans did you end up going with??

Tranny is a (Ford) Borg Warner T-19, Novac adapter plate, and a (Ford) Dana Spicer D-18 T-case with overdrive. No special gearing on the Dana, it's a road rig, mostly.

D18, is it flipped?

nunyabidness
11-04-2013, 11:53 AM
Not that I know of. I read it drops passenger at about -10 degrees... Shouldn't have to flip it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Yes, it does drop passenger side. And you need to drop driver side

nunyabidness

I'll need to do some digging, then. I was told to hunt for a passenger side drop. What are the negative aspects of flipping the t-case?

4.3LXJ

I am not sure you can flip those. I am unaware of any that were driver side drop. They have a unique 5 bolt pattern with the bottom bolt down low. I assume you are looking for a way to get an overdrive out of it for the lower rpms of the diesel. I would suggest looking for a different combo. The D300 can be flipped and is done all the time. It is a straight through tcase, meaning that the rear driveline is centered unlike the D18. It also has a 6 bolt ring pattern, like our XJs have. Or you can just use a stock Jeep tcase. My suggestion is to use a tranny such as the NV4500 or NV5500 with the overdrive in the tranny. This will add to the expense since you will need a tranny adapter for it but I think that will be the best option.

I have to have an adapter for the D18 as well. And it's more expensive than the T-case.

Well, I'm shopping, then. Thanks for the heads up. Saved me some dough, bro.

Decided to stick with the NP231 for now. Will upgrade the Tcase later.

Ran up on some problems... The undercarriage of the jeep is so rusted that the shop says it'd be pointless to put the diesel in. The stakes just wouldn't hold up to the torque. In short, it'll cost more to continue that I'm willing to commit.

In other news, I'm looking for another jeep to drop my 4BT into!

That's a bummer! Well at least you live in a state where it's relatively easy to get a cheap, rust-free XJ. Can't wait to see the finished product
