Standard transmission and 33s, I would go with the 4.56 ratio. That will give you the good low end grunt required and still be a good gear if you decide to move up to 35" tires. I am of the feeling that the pinion gear is too compromised, size wise, using a 4.88 gear.

If you were running an auto, I would say 4.10.

Just my opinion.

Shop I am getting my gears done at shortly said pretty much the same thing. I've got an auto so I'll be getting 4.10 in mine. If you do ever want to go to 35"s then 4.56 is the way to go.

I really like my 4.56 gears, however I have a heat creep problem on the highway. I've been fighting this issue for years. If I don't find an answer soon, and with the addition of Texas raising speed limits to 80 mph I might actually go to 4.10 gears if/when I go with lockers.

If you have a standard tranny I would not go any deeper than 4.10s for highway use. If you have dedicated your XJ to trail use, then either ratio would be good
