Simple home brew snorkel with stock air box...

Plugged front intake with styrofoam, can be removed if need be.

Made hole for 2" pvc adapter in back of box.

Used 2" pvc, fittings, galvanized clips, self tapping screws for the rest.

Top is made from 4" cap and short pipe glued. Up inside is 2" cap with brass bolt sticking up through to hold topper. On 2" pipe inside topper is about 12 half inch holes for air flow of course.

Fairly easy project to do, getting hole through fender correctly can be the tricky part.

Not to shabby, I need to make one to go with me to the trail but I do not like them on all the time.

Hey bigbadxj, I under stand. If you look at 3rd pick down there is a rubber 90* elbow with hose clamps. It makes it easy to remove.

That's a pretty darn good lookin snorkel you got there. You know what, You could make some money on that mod. Grab all the pieces you need, throw em in a box and sell it as a "budget snorkel" and I'm sure it will get you some income ;)

I made one out of pvc for my TJ a couple years ago. It worked wonders and not a drop of water ever touched my filter again. I used 3" thought cuz 2" seemed to feel like my tj smoked ciggarettes it's entire life and couldn't breathe. You gotta make sure the filter box is completely sealed though. Sometimes there's a drain hole at the bottom that allows water to drain....and fill. I ran a gasket between the mating surface of the top and lower part of the air box too cuz water seeped in there (it warps from the heat).

But good job!

Could you add something explaining how and what to use to cut the two large holes? Snorkles are quite expensive and I can see how this would be a very useful and money saving mod.

Thank you everybody for the complements, And Tony, The holes through the fender were cut with a hole saw, slightly larger than outside of 90* elbow to allow pipe to lay flat on fender. I went at a slight angle to get below the inner fender bend where the hood sets. Bob........

I did the same thing to my old XJ but with the 2", I found that the intake was too restricted. Did you notice a difference on yours? On my new one I have run a 3" dryer hose from the back of the airbox into the cowl for the invisible snorkel look and with the 3" its much less restricted. Didn't notice a difference except for intake noise.

Yea i think I'm going to use my old filter box(got a cone in right now) and make a snorkel just like yours for the trails. Just got to figure out what to do about that big hole when it is not on?

Hey budgetxj,It doesn't appear to be restricted as far as I can tell. Mine is made of 2" pvc.Your hidden snorkel sounds like a cool idea.

Hey lowrider, I'll put together some pic's of topper so you can see how I did it.

Hey bigbadxj, I've been on the look out for a rubber plug for mine.I've been thinking the same thing,I'd like to not run with it at times.

Hey lowrider and anyone else thats wondering about topper,Here is some pics.

As you can see at the 2nd pic the top of the 2" is capped, with a brass bolt through the top. It is held in place with a nut. There is multiple holes drilled for air of course. 1st pic is topper made from 4" cap and short piece of pipe glued together. Drill hole in center of cap, mount it with wing nut and its done.

Here's another idea for the cap. This is what I did on my TJ. I was gonna make some kind of cap like yours but ended up going this way cuz it's more free flowing:

Hi muddeprived, Very slick idea. I may redo mine like that. Even though mine seems to have plenty of flow. But your design ensures good flow..........

You'll get more flow than me cuz I used 3" pvc and had about 3/4" of space for air flow. It did it's job though and never sucked in any water. I had it right next against my windshield too.

N1TZU--sorry to bring an old one back to life but>>>just wanted to know if the 2" piping has caused any restriction. i am battling to find 3" here in SA. the stuff i can find is UGLY!!! i have 2 thoughts and that is 2" or going with 76mm exhaust piping and mandrel bends, then having it powder coated. the only thing is rust but with a 4.0 sucking so much air i am sure it should suck dry in a couple of seconds and there should be no rust of major concern. let me know plz.
Steve

Measure for the smallest diameter opening in the stock intake. You should not go anything smaller than that.

Sorry friends,Just checked this thread and found a question.....Xjstevie--so far I haven't noticed any lack of air or power...It seems to work fine...You can't find 2" drainage PVC out your way? Try you local plumbing store...they should have what you need...

i have decided to go with 76mm stainless exhaust piping and mandrel bends (short 90* and 45's). i will then have it powder coated. i'm doing this cause i intend boring out the throttle body and then 50mm is going to be to small if i want to suck more air seeing it will be bored out to 60mm at the bottom but thanx anyways. will keep you posted.

Please post some pics of that Stevie. SS is quite expensive and hard to locate here unless special ordered and then the cost is even higher.

shall do guys. i will be using the lower grade exhaust SS that we get here in South Africa. i am ordering the mandrel bends on Monday. the company (tyres, exhausts, batteries) i work for gets good prices from a exhaust factory that make baffles etc. i have organized to get a special price seeing i'm an employee.
2mx76mm, 3x90*, 2x45* bends, all for around R350 (+- $50). not to bad.

Hey, i had an idea on how to make a snorkle have better flow and put a cone filter on it. i kinda got this from another forum but they had something 10x more complicated. non the less on my dads 99 ford expedition it had a cone type filter in a oval type box. it could be retro fitted if you can find one in a salvage yard, because it is 3" in and out so it should be easy enough then just do the snorkle like you normally would. but if you wanted a true (k&n) cone filter you could always to the coffe can airbox, this is the one i got from the other forum its kinda complicaded but not really the hardest part is making the seal. but all you do is take a coffe can put the steel side to the TB and connect how ever you can ( what ever sized hose needed) and the plastic side you cut a hole to fit a pvc pipe though and seal it ( the pvc pipe should fit you filter) and the just route it where you want. that is the jist of it sorry i cant be too technical w it, i found the artical 3+ yrs ago when i had my wrangler. but i am going to do the first i mentioned and see how that turns out. I will post pics if it works!!

That's a good idea. Do they still sell coffee CANS? I always see the big plastic jugs at my store......but good idea!

I saw some threads on people using a hummer intake, which is a big round container with a hi flow cone filter in it or something but those are $$. There's another car that has a similar setup but i cannot remember the name of it.

i had my throttle body and spacer bored out to 60.14mm and lowend power and torque are awsome. now i need gears for the upper end
