Here is my communication set up. It's all I got besides wireless internet. I do not have a land line, but I do have a hand scanner :hmmmm2:...................................... in a box somewhere.

Keep in mind, and since you guys deal with ice and snow you may already know this, during an emergency cell phones CAN be of little use.

Cell phones work on a repeater type technology in as much as they require a sophisticated electronic communications relay station to be located very near by.

These communications relay stations hand you off as you travel from one CELL to the next. There are NO provisions for your cell phone to work without this communications relay station.

If the power, or antennas go out during an emergency at the cell station nearest you, you now have a nice light instead of a communications device.

Spend the less than $100 and get a CB. This basic point to point communications can let you know what is going on close by and get you help, however keep in mind that people could be using the CB to help themselves in a time of emergency, so you need to weigh your situation with how bad it could be if certain BAD people got involved.

I keep looking at CB's and I do plan on getting one this summer, around here cell service is bad anyways I get service in heppner, but then I have to travel at least 50 miles befor I get it again

I recommend Uniden/Cobra. You can get two, and just use a 12 volt power supply for the house. Nice thing is doing that you can move it from your house to another vehicle if needed. When you go to get one I can give you some ideas as to what to get.

Right now I have a cheaper Midland CB. Want to go to a better Cobra with weather band. Also want a GPS unit and maybe a Scanner. I was thinking in Indiana scanners were illegal unless your fire, ems or police.

small world huh? i wasn't born deaf, but lost my hearing when i was 17. i can speak well and like your bro's wife, i can also lip read well. my dad always suggested that i join the military as a spy and gather info by lip reading people cuz i do it during televised sports games and stuff like that. in college, i would occasionally catch the other coach's plans from the other side of the court and we won a few ball games by countering what they had planned ;)

My super reliable point to point communications system.
It does require a decent line of sight to work properly,
....and the range is somewhat limited,
....but the technology has been around for quite some time,
....and replacement parts are easy to come by!

You're running a 250 watt amplifier on your CB? Part of the reason that the CB band is dying. Hard to talk to others in my area on 4 watts of power when there's guys blowing my radio out with 100s of watts

HAM radio license is like 15 bucks. A good 2 meter radio is 160ish. Cheaper than the 10,000 dollar fine the FCC could level against you for EACH infraction they can prove. But the chance of them catching you or even giving a crap is pretty much nil.

Anyway past that little rant

CB Radio is a Midland

Antenna for that unit is a Firestik 3 footer on a fender mount with a spring between them.

Other radio is a cheapo Dual Band (2meter/70cm) mobile a Lexian VV-898 that only runs about 10 watts on high, very compact and takes up very little space. Gets the job done though. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Kenwood or Chinese made 2meter only radio with more power available. The 10 watts has only been a hindrance in one situation so I'm not in any hurry.

Boy what a radio! I picked up a Motorola communications speaker for it and downloaded the free software "FreeScan" to program and control the scanner.
