It's a courting candle holder, the parents would set the depth of the candle depending on how much they liked the suitor and when it burned to top of the metal frame it was time to go for the night.

That just show the age of some of our members... these things (courting and candle light) didn;t exist while I was in age of dating....
I am just saying ;)

Question is how did you come in possession of that interesting piece of history ? it is cool ;)

It was'nt around when I dated either........

It's most likely a reproduction, although possibly not.......lots of folk art out in these parts....hard to say if it dates back, pretty basic.........I can tell you it did'nt come fom China though.....;)

It was purchased at an auction.

That is pretty cool... I knew it was a candle holder, with a handle... just didn't know it's exact purpose!!
