We'll laugh to ourselves. I didn't know what a SYE was until about 2 years ago when I started doing research about lifting my XJ.

SYE - Slip Yoke Eliminator

The gears I am talking about are the ring and pinion in the front and read differencial. If you go 32" or larger tires, they should be swapped for 4.10 or lower (numerically higher) gears.

My 93 cost me $3,200 six years ago, completely stock, excellent paint and 147,000 on the OD (tow miles) It is a 4x4, four door, automatic, and the country edition.
This is what it looked like until I let the paint go to crap

The lift I was thinking of had replacement leaf springs. You know you're going to have to do that sooner or later right?

Well if you want to do the majority of the work yourself then "YOU" can save a lot of money. I have just bought an MJ for $600 and a parts XJ for $200 and there are several on different boards that I frequent in the $1000-2000 range with many of the things Muddy mentioned already done. So you can find cheaper XJs and MJs but it depends upon what you want and how much you plan or want to do yourself. The budget can be flexible as well as affordable.
