Does anyone know if The shaft is a stock shaft out of a '99 NP231 which has 27 splines and it's housing will work on my '92 stock NP231. f so it will save me on the seal for the hack-n-Tap.

All the seals and internals are the same on XJ, YJ and TJ 231s except the early versions had a 21 spline input shaft so those need to match an early tranny. Otherwise everything internal in the same, chain, seals pump etc.....

I understand that the auto used a 21 or 23 spline for the tranny input but after '96 the rear DS output housing is different which make it so if you do a hack-n-tap you have to use a seal which is a extra $40 beans. But if the shaft is the same and the housing will bolt up to my 231 then I can use the one from the '99 and cut down on the expense. Here is a pic from the '99

Doesn't the 92 have bearings pressed onto the shaft? I can't remember what year they stopped doing that but my friend's 89 had bearings on it.

mudd I have rebuilt 2 90s 231s and I don't remember any pressed on bearings on either shaft, just the bearings in the tailshaft housing.

This is what I'm talking about:

The bearings are pressed into this:

You have to press out those bearings cuz the sye hd shaft is thicker and the bearings are not needed. His (89) had these, mine (01) did not.

If they are the same spline then you should not have to worry about those. I just wanted a spare for when I do the Hack-n-tap.

My HnT was easy to do while on a lift. I was scared to cut the shaft but I measured about ten times and followed the instructions carefully and it was pretty easy. Hardest part was making sure to center the hole and tap it slowly with plenty of oil to keep it lubed.

Any chance you could show a pic of what your H-n-T looks like now?

10 bucks a piece sound ok? of course plus shipping, which i think would be maybe $12 or so.
