As soon as I can afford it I want to replace the winch cable on the winch I'm getting with a synthetic winch rope. I'm wondering how much of a weight savings it will be. The shipping weight of the winch is 86lbs. I'm sure ALOT of it is the cable itself. The winch comes with about 90' of 5/16" cable.

Weight is one of the reasons I went with the Backbone over a bumper and I'd like to keep the setup as light as possible.

I'd do it sooner than later, while your steel cable is 'NEW' and 'UNSTRETCHED' which gives it decent resale on forums or ebay.....consider once sold, it can pay for 1/3-1/2 of the cost of your rope, and you'll save a few pounds at the same time!!

Shoot, I'm trying to find that article i read about two years ago over on JF. It was talkin about how much each weighs. I THINK it said the cable weight 16-20 lbs and synthetic was 2-4 lbs. Big difference in handling it but for a vehicle, it's a very minor difference.

The fairlead has to be changed if you go from steel to synthetic?

Yup. The steel roller can damage the rope.

I like that first one, looks cleaner.

I'm staying with steel. I may change my mind in the future, rust for example, but right now I'm going to stay with the tried and true.

Hummm... guess going to synthetic rope dosen't save all that much weight. It was just one of the reasons I want to got to synthetic. Easier handling, and getting rid of that damn HUGE roller fairlead is the other reasons.

Time to save some cash...again!:D

You can still run a hawse fairlead with the steel cable if you want. Rollers are nice but not required.

I personally dislike the rollers and ran the hawse with steel:
