the other one was i broke frame but the good thing about it was the jeep had a alt the was made into a stick welder so i got under there and did some welding and away we went . i think firemanray has some pics of that one

A while back BigJim posted a link on how to build a welder out of a GM alternator: http://www.midwesternmedicalmachine.com/~damonfg/weldernator/index.html
Now we have video of this conversion in action. I must admit I was very skeptical about this thing even working. Saturday at Creekside Wes broke the steering box on his Cj loose from the frame. Not a problem, he has a "weldernator" and all the equipment needed to make the repair. Rene stepped up and put it all back together. Here are some videos I shot of the "weldernator" in action:

Here is a short video of the "weldernator" up close and in operation:

Here's the finished product:

After the repair we wheeled for a couple of more hours without any problems.

That is pretty cool... I think I might want to learn to weld, before I bother building a weldanator... but am still thinking about gathering the parts, and maybe even building one regardless.. I'm sure someone will be able to weld out on the trails... LOL..

nice fix with the weldernator, I have done a few welds with the battery jumpercables and a coat hanger in fact I still carry a couple of coat hanger with me just in case. Also a hi lift jack handle will work as a tie rod in a pinch. Gosh I wish I could remember all the crap I've done to get home , but nesesity is the mother of invention !!!!

dude now I WISH I was there to see this thing in action! I have been wondering about this for years and wether it would hold a BA weld or if it was kinda of a weaker weld. I guess you just use regular ARC rods?

Thats was my Jeep Rene patched up for me, I built the weldinator so I could learn how to weld (its cheaper then a real welder), Im getting better but have alot to learn. I do want to point out that I started with the same type of alternator the jeep uses that way if the alternator goes bad I can just rewire the weldinator back to the way it was and keep going. its only 3 small parts you have to take out and I keep them with me so I can put them back in if ever needed. Another thing is that instead of adjusting AMPs you adjust the RPMs for more power, at 4000 RPMs it will weld to the frame no problem. That being said another catch is that the hotter you weld with it the faster the weldinator heats up enough that the belt will start slipping, our way of cooling it down was to turn it off and pour muddy water on it, worked great. this thing is worth its weight in gold and is pretty cheap to build (about 100 bucks give or take Alternator- $45 jumper cables (4 gauge) $33 alternator bracket from junkyard $5 2 wheel pully from napa $9 belt $8 total $100 dollars+rods) I sure am glad Rene was out there though cause he is a heck of a welder.

sweet, now I have something else to make room for under the hood. going to be getting crowded with OBA and Weldernator added to what's there already, but I'll make room.
