I was thinking about buying a new tie rod. And was wondering what everybody used for bigger TRE's i saw rusty's used bigger ones in their HD set up. Anybody know what they are and i am assuming they bolt right up?

i can get a piece of tube or bar stock at work for free. Where does everybody get the tube inserts?

thanks

I was looking at the "Big Daddy's" tie rod. I liked it, but the only thing that kind of concerned me was the stock tie rod ends.

Several people on here run it and they love it though.

Here is a pretty good write up and review. :link: (http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/bigdaddytierod/index.asp)

Hello kmanxj, When I rebuilt my xj I used the Currie system. Very heavy duty and easy to install, I was very pleased how it all worked out. Bob....

$25 for the ZJ TR is a good price.

I also run the Currie with great results. Nice and beefy.

I do recommend the Big Daddy. The only downfall is the use of the stock TRE's, but in all reality, it takes 5 minutes to swap out a TRE, and the Big Daddy is really beefy, so I would personally be OK with carrying a few spare TRE's and using the BD.

That makes good sense, and the TRE are pretty cheap. I guess if something has to break the TRE is a good place.

Totally agree! Everything HAS a weak link somewhere, and as 2000XJ said a TRE is an easy a place to get to for repairs.

I run a BD tierod, and it made quite a difference in the front end. Even with my "little" 31's, I know the stock tierod was flexing. They are VERY wimpy!

so changed my mind on it all again!!!

this right here is what i am doing. I priced all the stuff from ballistic to do it and it is just under 80 bucks (minus jam nuts)

i found some 1.25" aluminum bar stock at work today and am thinking about making it out of that. I know teraflex's steering is hex aluminum.

Hello kmanxj, I do understand the limited budget thing. The thing to bear in mind, and is the most important thing ,(SAFETY) So any way that you do it, try to make it stronger than stock, with lifts and bigger tires, steering and also brakes are the most important tools on are toys. Best of luck in your upgrades. Bob......

Also Kmanxj I would not use aluminum I would use some solid stock or DOM tubing.

I have the Big Daddy and used Moog Tierods. Much better end then stock. I carry my olde set up as a spare. There are several companies out there. T&T Offroad,Rugged Ridge and some others make a replacement

I have the ZJ tie rod and Moog TREs and have been very happy. It is much heavier than the XJ setup was and I doubt the solid tie rod will flex much. I have a set of TREs that I carry for spares but have in the 5 years never needed them. Get the J/Y ZJ tie rod and new TREs and you will be on the cheap and much stronger at the same time.
