This hose with the plastic top piece that I am touching, does anyone know what it is and what it's for?
It is not connected to anything but just hanging straight down.

Want to know if it should be connected somewhere

I dont have my XJ here but i think it should be going into your front diff for refilling gear oil.

Its not For filling. Its the Differential Vent line. As the axle warms up from being driven around the oil expands. Well the air it displaced needs to go some ware. The expanding air goes out the plastic cap you are pointing to and as the oil cools it pulls fresh air back through the vent. Its there to keep from blowing the diff oil out of the seals.

Yep for the front diff. Theres one under the Jeep for the rear diff as well as the Transfer Case and transmission.
I have plans to move all my vents up under the hood. and install some small breather filters on them.
Go Jeep used gas filters. I'm going to use small breathers.

So I should probably have someone fix this?

Nothing needs to be fixed. It is just the breather and if you want to do anything it could use a filter on it so that trash doesn't get it clogged or obstructed.

The other end, not the one I was touching in the photo is just hanging near the ground, this end does not need to be attached anywhere?

Yes. Reconnect the other end to the front diff.* with a clamp so that it doesn't come off again.

*It might alternately go on the t-case, you'll have to get under there and investigate.

It should be pretty obvious where it attaches to the diff, but does someone have a picture they could post? I'll try to get one up when my son returns my camera after his road trip.

It should be attached to your axle differential. There should be a white tube sticking out near the top of the diff (backside) and the hose goes on that. I've seen them snapped off a few times so that may happened.

See the little tube sticking out of the top (axle on the right)? It's usually white but this one has been painted black.

thanks guys!!!

I must have broken since it is not near long enough right now to reach my diff. Any hose you all recommend? Or just any old hose will do?

The goal is to have it up high enough that when you do puddle, creek or river crossings water doesn't funnel down it into your diff. Quick way to lose your diff.Mine comes up through my body and sits behind the rear panel where the o.e.m. spare tire goes, other one comes up under the hood.

I swear I have never seen that thing attached to my D30. I have to check when I get it back (it's in the shop). Could be because I just wasn't looking for it. As for the rear ... um ... yeah, I definitely have to check. The 8.25 blew huge quantities of oil out 2 holes a while back & I thought that I had overfilled it. This certainly bears some investigation.

(sigh) Every day I realize just how little I know ...

Yep it is the vent valve.
Did you say it wasn't connected to any thing? I would check my axle make sure it is connected to it!!
