Ok for the guy's wanting to know if you motor ever has had bottom end work look for the tail tail sign. from the pic i know the main bearings are .30 over and rods are .20 over. If I would have seen this before I retourqed the main caps I could get a date when the work was performed (the back side of the bearings have a date stamp

Ok so everyone else sees what you are showing here, but I don't. I've only build an engine twice and that was years ago. These bearing look new, or nearly so to me.

The bearings have a little wear but still have the original markings from when they were made. No signs of numerous cold starts or dogging ,and best of all a maintained motor:thumbsup:

Ok i'll post up updated pics later. So she did run for 30 mins  The motor runs strong. A little lifter tap at first ,but its gone now:cheerleader:. So i'm jumping off into a electrical issue. No the issue is no spark and no mil light. After some checking (all fuses and relays are operational) but no power to the ecu (pin 9 dead) so i'm gonna go after a ignition switch tonight and see if I power there.

My brake light always gave me problems until I replaced the switch with one from NAPA. The Advanced Parts one was intermittent and the O'Reiley's one as well, but I always suspected the switch.

Well amc sure had a case of hua. The brake problem was the 3rd wire in the battery terminal (shinny red one) it only feeds the 15 amp fuse called hazards/brakelights (underhood fuse box). I did't hook it up since i thought it was from a aftermarket amp install since i had a few zipped tied wires on the harness.

As I recall this made a noticeable difference on mine. That was after the 3 core though. Does yours squeal at times? Usually on acceleration. A big ass hole in your hood will help as well. Let me know if you want the list. I can almost guarantee that you won't over heat moving slow or still.

As I recall this made a noticeable difference on mine. That was after the 3 core though. Does yours squeal at times? Usually on acceleration. A big ass hole in your hood will help as well. Let me know if you want the list. I can almost guarantee that you won't over heat moving slow or still.

Holy crap! Great visual, now I understand how far down it was. I would assume you diagnose this as high revving when cold because of low/no lubrication on the bearings. If so could this also be a failing oil pump, or low oil?

yes to the high revving when cold because of low/no lubrication on the bearings. the bearings would be completely scored if it was a failing oil pump, or low oil

I've kicked the idea around but I think i'll be better off balancing the rod & pistons combo. I have no desire to put the rpm's to a 4.0 so 5k maybe tops it ever see's that. And this rig is not a dd only a weekend toy along with the rest :rolleye0012:

Matt, it is my understanding that the 4.o crank is horribly out of balance. To compensate for this, they used different weight pistons. So there is a proper #1, #2 etc. My contention is that this robs horsepower, just as the counter balance shaft in my engine is a band aid that takes away horsepower.

Well i'll have a look at it tonight. I know this one was balanced at one point (you can see the drill marks) and i'll call the machine shop to verify. They very well may have.

fyi i had real fun with this unbalanced motor :) 0-60 3.5 sec and 0-117 in 11sec we ate ujoints for lunch in it (solid spicers would last a week)

After some research I and past experience trying to make them run clean enuf for the dyno (tailpipe inspections required here) I opted to stay stock. This guy has excellent Mod Diary http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/diary.html also see his other link about electronic mods http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/electronic.html. The price for the crank and rods is cheep compared the electronics needed to make it pass inspection (in my area). Also if i was gonna spend that kind of money (electronics & stroker) I would just stay 4.0 and turbo it, and blow the stroker power away. (if im gonna fight it to pass inspections, were gonna have some real fun hints my turbo 97 neon) Now if it was a 96+ i would stroke it since ecu's are easy to trick to pass.

but the turbo takes a few seconds to spool up ... not really beneficial on the rocks however in the MUD it would do prettty good... one of the mechs at our shop has a garrett turbo from a grand national that hes putting in his TJ

Its a good day, I got the block back from the machine shop. It was $345 to get it all checked out and punched .030 over here is a list of the things they did.

1. Clean the block
2. Pressure test and check for cracks (known in the lifter galley to have some)
3. New cam bearings and freeze plugs
4. Punch it to .030
5. Check the deck (not needed)
6. Check the line bore to verify the crank doesn't bind up
7. Remove a broken bolt in the water pump area
8. Check to see if the rods were true (resized)
9. Press the new pistons onto the rods

I'll get some pics of it tonight!!! Some how the camera didn't like Bigjim350 if flip-flops:sign0181:

The only hermit crab on the block and he owns a 2WD Red Jeep :rolleye0012:, But he has a OFF-ROAD sticker on the windshield. Honestly i tend to avoid the fella since he wants me to fix the blue tank in front of the Jeep.

Looks awesome. Is the intake powder coated? What gasket do you plan to run on the intake? I've got a 99+ intake and the gasket is different between 97 & 99. Not sure which one to run.

Yes the intake is coated. As far for the gasket I'll have to get back to you on it

I like that powder-coated IM.. was thinking about having my IM powder-coated too.. If I remember correctly from the research I did when I was looking to pick up my 99+ IM that you are better off using the 97-98 gasket, as the Intake/Exhaust ports on the 99+ heads were smaller, which was part of the reason for the larger runner designed manifold.. I could be wrong, but that is what I seem to remember when I was doing my research..

James, Summit Racing has all the stuff so you can do your own for cheap and use the wife's oven when she is not looking to bake it. That makes it nor much worse than spray painting

01-29-2012, 12:53 AM
Well the good thing is.. the wife (soon to be ex) isn't around too much, so I don't have to worry about hiding the use of the oven for this.. LOL.. But wonder how much it would mess up as far as the oven.. Was looking at a decent starter setup for poweder coating yesterday.. Once I get a new place, and the divorce is final, might have to look into it for sure..

Is the roof rack 1 piece or will it break down? The real question is will it fit in the oven.

I did my senior project on powder coating and loved it. Learned a lot about it. Just as a safety precaution everyone told me not to use an oven that will be used for cooking.

Anyways love the valve cover and intake manifold! Gives me a few ideas for some stuff I can powder coat for mine
