I was bored and broke today and wanted to do something to the jeep. I plan on painting it someday a flat color, like desert tan, od, or even black. So I figured id get a head start and use up a can of satin black paint I had lying around. By the way if anybody local would like to swap there black handles and mirrors for my chrome ones let me know. So now for the pics. What do you think?

Good luck with trading for door handles and mirrors... Ive been trying the same thing for over a year I finally just said screw it and shot them black as well ... the mirrors no problem the handles PAINTED good but didnt hold up too long... also dont forget the replace or paint your windshield surrounds... that is also a pain for KEEPING paint on there... I think Im gonna wire wheel mine first this time to get a good adhesion! but yeah I plan on going desert tan soon and IMO black LOOKS great but if you have over heating issues and you paint it flat black it will just add to your frustration... go a lighter color! I thought about terra cotta red like this

but I remembered that it would show tree scratches REALLY bad and Id be repainting very often

What about a local p-n-p for the handles and mirrors??? or have some people that live in other places look for the parts in their local p-n-p's.... I would if I was at home right now... I thought about painting mine a flat black or flat desert tan... and then later down the road having a perfessional paint job done changing the color to the metallic orange that the Rubi's used to have... but wouldn't want to waste the money on the paint, just to have it all torn to hell on the trails... so will just stick with my current color, and maybe down the line rattle can desert tan it...

A guy on another site is giving me his black handles. And I'm pretty dead set on painting the jeep OD now.

I HATE chrome on xjs, the grill looks 1000 times better man. If you're just gonna rattle can it, the spray can bed liner sticks alot better than regular spray paint. That's what's on my mirrors and windshield trim, and all the other black parts on my rig. Haven't had a chip anywhere on it. I forget who said earlier about the door handles not holding up well after painting, but they're right, mine were painted white with the rest of the rig and after a couple months they look like crap. I think I'm gonna take mine all off and spray line them too.

I think if you get a rubberized undercoating for the chrome portions you should be okay... Mine only scratched up cause I wheel in tight places where every tree branch rubs it

Well maybe I'll get lucky this weekend and sand them good againts a tree, then the paint will stick.

is that like a aframe for towing ya jeep jim ...

Yep. That is a piece of 2"x2"x3/8" angle bolted to the bottom of the bumper, with two tabs running from the angle to the unibody and 2 more bolts. Then I just hook up my tow bar with the pins. And I also have a trailer light converter so my tail lights and blinkers work on the jeep when its being towed.

11-18-2010, 05:48 PM
Yeah I got to find myself a new grill that isn't cracked.. mine has a crack that is growing slowly.. so going to find one that isn't cracked.. and will repaint it black... as my current one is a bit faded anyways... Going to either look into the same paint you did, or go with Krylon Fusion paint... since I already have some left over from my flares.. Looking good though Jim!!

Have had a few people point that out on my XJ as well... I am as much against chrome as I can... I mean if I can help it, I'm looking for black shackles when I do upgrade my bumpers...
