I thought the 98 and 99 where the same?

My 1998 is the square-ish intake. I want the curvy one. I don't want to put it on though. That's a lot of work! I guess it wouldn't be so bad if I could reach the bolts from below the Jeep.

is it about better flow, or looks?

Flow it adds like 12-15HP & 15-18ft/tq

nice, couldn't you port the older ones and get the same/close to the same HP/TQ#?

I'm sure porting a polishing would increase the hp and torque however you get that with plain 99+ intake. Now I wonder what porting and polishing a 99+ would do for you.

I finally located a intake for my 98xj,it's off a 01.The manifold is going to set me back $100 plus tax.It is going to be here tuesday or wednsday of this week,I can't wait!!!Going to be a couple of weeks before I install it though, saving up to get my "Banks Header" to go with it.This will be the last of my mods until I rebuild the motor, whenever that might be.

You may already know this but changing the exhaust manifold is a B*TCH! The same bolts hold both the intake and exhaust, so changing them both at the same time is a good idea.

I have been told that to get the proper torque on the bolts people actually remove the head, install the intake and exhaust manifold and then reinstall the head on the block.

Needless to say I didn't do that when I replaced my exhaust manifold, however doing so may have taken the same amount of time.

If it wasn't for the location of some of the bolts it wouldn't be a bad job. I would imagine any intake that I did get would sit for a while before I installed it. :D

Mine wasnt too bad to put back together. I had to put a junk yard motor in mine after my original decided that it needed water after a water pump replacement, sha!
