I've got this problem with my XJ the distributor is not firing I've replaced the ignition coil and the rotor. the guys at checker said I should replace the crank sensor (CKP) or the distributor they also said another part inside the distributor but I forgot what they said cuz it was only a buck cheaper than the whole thing. well these things can get pretty expensive and since these parts are not refundable after opening I dont want to be guessing at it. is there any way to check them? http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv254/hatchetman0170/crankshaft_sensor.jpg http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv254/hatchetman0170/20216E.jpg

CPS is my guess. If you replace it ($50-60) and it turns out to not be the culprit you should always keep a spare anyway. The part in the dizzy that they mentioned was probably the cam position sensor and they rarely go bad if the dizzy has a good seal.
So slap it all back together and replace the CPS (crank position sensor) and it will fire right up.

Before replacing the CPS disconnect and reconnect it first. It could be dirty.

:mad:Well turns out that the body shop that welded my door earlier that day didn't disconnect the battery and fried the computer. I got it running now but i'm out the cash i spent on getting that fixed.

Thanks for the help

lol the body shop should be the one to pay then, not you.

Is that an OBDI or OBDII ECU? If it is an OBDI I may have a spare but if it is OBDII you are on your own.

Yeah I thaught about getting them to pay but they'll just deny it or refuse to pay.

It's OBDI but i already got it replaced my XJ is up and running.

And alot of people still think thats a myth...........

I don't know anything about welding so I didn't think about that. Bt now I know.

Plus the mechanic jacked me I only asked him for a quote and he replaced the parts without telling me

Word! Wanted to let you know there is a sensor inside your DIST> called the (pick-up coil). and if it is burnt your ride will not start! Good Luck

I could be mistaken, but I don't think it's a pick-up coil, it's a camshaft position sensor, is there a difference? I thought you usually only hear old school mechanics refer to them as "pick-up coils."

Also, I'm sure you already resolved this long ago, but for future reference, it could also be the ignition module, which is the box the coil is screwed to. Had to test my whole ignition system a couple weeks ago so I could track down what was wrong. I wasn't about to spend $100's trying to figure out the problem. If you don't have a Fluke meter you can always have your local auto parts store test it for you.

I'm thinkin I might need to check mine... Went to start it today and it would crank but not fire up. Good voltage, I can hear the fuel pump cycle when the key is on. tested the coil and the primary was showing WAY too much resitance, so I got a new one but it didn't seem to be the problem. So Now I'm thinking it's probably the CPS or the distributor. Is the CPS something that just goes out without warning, or is it a gradual thing? I'm wondering if it could explain the sputtering/stalling symptoms I've been having for a while now.

When mine went bad the first time I had my door welded earlier that day so not sure if that is what caused it. This time what happened is that my brother broke it while helping me pull the motor out

Yes Toebee the cps can be the cause of sputtering and cutting out. That's what mine did, even to the point of the engine just dying while driving along. Replaced the sucker and haven't had that problem since.

mine is taking spells to where ti will just turn over and over and not fire from the coil i have tried the coil and module it sits on could it be the cps also it just does it on warmer days and might do it all day one day but then not do it for weeks
