I have finally gotten caught up with all of my orders for the first time in 2 years. Its an amazing feeling. I have been working on a ton of prototype Ideas for a while and I decided that I would share the pieces and parts here in the fabrication section because that is exactly all this is.

I finished my P-type double shear track bar bracket tonight. I only wanted 3 parts and only 1 bend. The drawings will go to a laser guy later this week but here is my hand made P-type

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr308/ibuildbigtoys/DCP_3680.jpg

I use a miller 350P pulse Mig welder with a 3 part gas to keep the splatter to a minimum. I only do that stacked dime looking welding for my own personal parts. everything else gets a constant heat stitch type weld.

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr308/ibuildbigtoys/DCP_3681.jpg

The extra set of holes is for a cross bar going to the opposing side of the frame for extra stability.

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr308/ibuildbigtoys/DCP_3682.jpg

I think its important to do as few pieces as possible so I integrated the angle gusset into the lower support. This also allows for longer welds with less stopping and starting. The origin and termination of a weld is the most common fail point. Thankfully miller designed this machine with what they call background voltage, This eliminates cold starts.

I didn't get to spend any more time on this today. but I hope to have more up for ya'll tomorrow night. I ended up spending the evening machining an anti sway setup for a local buggy. Who knew an old YJ sway bar could be turned down and put on a comp buggy
Its fun to be building new and different stuff again :D

I made the cross bar tonight but no pics yet I;m going to mod the bends a bit more before I show how it works I want extra clearance to work on all lifts.

I copied this out of the fabrication section so people could post up questions and feedback without having to be moderated.

Wow this is nice! Until Andy told me (I didn't read) I thought this bar was the track bar!!!! It's just the brace! :rotfl2:

Andy did you give any thought to building more of a boxed design? Connection not only of the bottom of the uni-body but up the sides? I'm sure if would be stronger, but is it necessary or at least a good idea?

4.3LXJ
07-22-2010, 03:37 PM
I have seen one or two that did that. Might interfere with rock sliders down the road.

I was talking with Andy earlier, and he said it is bolted and welded to the uni-body. So I understood why it wasn't boxed then. Should be very strong.

I have been working around with a lot of long arm Ideas. Ignore the threading on this arm because its just a mock up I made the main piece too short but The high ground clearance and tire clearance are the goal for these radius arms.

4.3LXJ
07-28-2010, 06:41 PM
As far as clearance goes, I think the tire clearance and ground clearance are great. The only question I would have is where the track bar and top link might meet on full stuff. I am thinking that if you did not market it as a kit compete with bump stops you might have problems with people who buy stuff and then neglect to bump stop properly afterwards. That would be a headache you don't need.

ironmanandy
07-28-2010, 06:51 PM
the track bar is nowhere near the path of travel, that's just an illusion in the pic. The track bar is a good 3 inches in front of it.

The really bad part about this is that back in the day, I used to design and build suspensions. And I know XJ suspensions forwards and backwards. I was looking at that thinking, OK now what is some candidate for the Darwin Awards going to do that is really dumb and blame him for. I completely forgot about the positioning.

Looks like some really good stuff you're working on. My 98 XJ is a candiate for the steering brace. The frame is cracked at the steering box and was the source of knock-your-teeth-out deathwobble. The fix was to plate & weld but it still needs the brace. Thanks for posting up!

Andy will the longarm crossmember work on the screwed up frame rails on a MJ? I think it is far enough forward it should but thought I would ask. Also does it work with AX 15s as well as AW 4s?

ironmanandy
08-02-2010, 10:44 AM
It is made to work with everything actually. I used an MJ and XJ cross member for mocking as well as have all bolt holes. i am currently testing these with different folks

Keep your eyes open for the new long arm design pics and a sale on the arms for builders and guys waiting for the X member that want to go ahead and get the arms cheap now. It should be up tomorrow

Happy memorial day everyone!, I know I ahve been a ghost on here for the last few months as we have been overwhelmed with racing and trying to grow our fun little company. As we get deeper into summer a lot more guys has been bugging me daily about our cross member and long arm setup. I just wanted to update you all and let you know that the design is with our laser/forming company and they are due for testing near the end of june. The final design is a radius arm or 3 link setup available from the same cross member.
Keep your eyes open

I guess I don't understand. These are companies that you are trying to hire to make the cross member, make the parts, or you're trying to sell the design to?

Perhaps, non of the above.

ironmanandy

Its the companies I use to do my laser cutting and forming. (press brake work)
The bends for my final design are quite complex and over complicated for them so they reject my drawings.

It was a cross member that had everything. frame and pinch seam mounts. full belly skid, 2,3, 4 link mounts... .

sucks.
Just gonna go with a basic X member for now. Should be affordable. It will be similar to Claytons but allow for a longer arm. May have holes for a bolt on 3 link.

ugh....

well... I put 4 cross member kits through my jig this afternoon.
They all came out the same. I hope folks are ready for something a little different.

That is my attempt at a teaser.

For Everyone that put down payments down on long arm kits, I will have them ready to ship by the end of this next week. I know I said the test price would be 700.00 for the whole kit but it is actually only 600.00 (Test buyers only who have previously paid into the program) I have kept track of the payment history. Thankfully no refunds lol but a few folks still have a bit more to finish their lay away.
Hit me up any time so we can get it all taken care of and long arm kits on the way.
